Here’s a list of the best fishing days and times for 2016, when the Moon is between new and full (EDT).

Got any fishing tales? Share below and check out other readers’ tips!

The Sun, Moon, tides, and weather all influence fish activity. For example, fish tend to feed more at sunrise & sunset. During a full moon, tides are higher than average and fish tend to feed more.

However, most of us go fishing when we can get the time off, not because it is the best time!

  • January 9 – 23
  • February 8 – 22
  • March 8 – 23
  • April 7– 22
  • May 6 – 21
  • June 4 – 20
  • July 4 – 19
  • August 2 – 18
  • September 1 – 16, 30
  • October 1 – 16, 30, 31
  • November 1 – 14, 29, 30
  • December 1 – 13, 29 – 31

For your customized Moon times, see our Moon Phase Calendar.

Best Times for Fishing

  • One hour before and one hour after high tides, and one hour before and one hour after low tides. Inland, the times for high tides correspond with the times when the Moon is due south. Low tides are halfway between high tides.
  • During the “morning rise” (after sunup for a spell) and the “evening rise” (just before sundown and the hour or so after).
  • When the barometer is steady or on the rise. (But even during stormy periods, the fish aren’t going to give up feeding. The smart fisherman will find just the right bait.)
  • When there is a hatch of flies—caddis flies or mayflies, commonly. (The fisherman will have to match his fly with the hatching flies or go fishless.)
  • When the breeze is from a westerly quarter rather than from the north or east.
  • When the water is still or rippled, rather than during a wind.

  • The best way to fish in South Texas with chicken liver, is to let it sit a while in the good Texas sun, sprinkle a little garlic powder and a little chili powder. This combination makes the liver pasty and it will stay on your triple or single hook with little to no problem. I do offer a warning, that pow you will feel on your line is going to be one big Texas size catfish, so get ready and have some good Texas fishing fun. –Ramiro Vela
  • A really good bait I have found is hot dogs with chicken meat. Cut them in desired pieces and set in the sun to ‘dry up’. When they are ‘dried’, they will stay on the hook better. You can put them in a bag in the freezer to keep. Brim and catfish will bite this bait. –Jean Cannon
  • The best catfish bait are catalpa worms. You can put what you don’t use in the freezer with a few catalpa tree leaves. When you are ready to fish again, take them out and they come back to life. Start reeling in the big cats. –Joey Brown
  • To find the big cats, it would help out if you knew the underwater structure of the pond, river or lake. Find DEEP holes with lots of cover as in over-hangs. Gravel pits are a great place to fish for cats. –Todd Heil
  • The best catfish bait that I have found fishing for catfish anywhere bar none is shrimp, yeah it’s a little costly but let me tell ya somethin’ friend, it’s worth it. –Chuck Hubbard Jr.
  • I am Blackfoot American Native. We live to fish and hunt our meals. A true hint in catfishing is never to use any type of scents (Cologne, powders, perfume, etc.) Don’t handle cigarettes or any type of tobacco products without washing your hands before applying baits, hooks, sinkers, new line, etc. The fish know these things. –Tommy Bays
  • The absolute best way I know to keep your liver on your hook while fishing is: Buy 1 or 2 old plastic ice trays. Go ahead and bait your hook the best you can. I use a “threading” action. Place the hook and liver into the ice tray and let it freeze throughout the night before you go fishing. When you are ready to go fishing, just twist the old ice trays and take the liver cubes and pack them in a bag and put them in a container of ice. –Chris Payne
  • In Kentucky where I live we use bait store crickets and mill worms floated with a bobber. Put three or four crickets and a couple of mill worms on a hook and hold on! You have you try different depths until you find the fish. Once you find them you can have a lot of fun catching all sizes. I have caught them from squeakers to 62 pounds on this bait, so good luck! –Kenny Conley
  • I’m 68 years old and fish every chance I get. My daddy always told me to watch the cows. If they are up and eating, go fishing. If they are down resting, you might as well stay home. So far this has worked pretty well. –Edna James
  • The best bait I have used here in Bradenton, Fla. is fresh mullet that has never been frozen. Catch them late afternoon or at night. Catch them as long as your leg. Good Luck! –Bill Suggs
  • As the water in your minnow bucket warms the minnows will slowly die. They need a very cool temperature to survive. Never put ice cubes in with live minnows. The chlorine in the water stays and will kill your bait. Freeze water bottles then gently place them in the bucket. Usually one will be enough. –Alec Plummer
  • Try it all, love the outdoors and keep a bait in the water. You won’t catch anything if you aren’t out there! –Jody Wolf

When Salmon fishing here in No. Cali, I wrap a chunk of fish roe in a small piece of cheesecloth. Caught several lunkers using this. Was taught by a wise old fisherman.

FISHING IN OROVILE CA!!

The best bait iv found is.......... well it depends on where u are.. even in the same big lake, different schools of fish although the same breed will eat different baits.. I.E. I can fish one area in the lake for spotted bass using a watermelon colored plastic worm, and almost every cast has a bite. but in the same lake about 20 mins away, the fish don't want anything to do with that plastic worm.... instead they may like go after certain colored crank baits.. .. it all depends on what they are custom to eating where they live....

basic for fishing

its been years since ive done any fishing,my biggest problem is learning how to throw a fishing rod.since I have retired I get tired of working in the garden.how can I get a dvd on fishing?

bloodworm

I'm from Russia. Recent trends for fishing - artificial bloodworm, maggots, caterpillars, worm and caviar. Motyl is made from a protein with flavor and looks beautiful, like a real worm. This is a unique Russian product. Its fishermen are buying from Russia, Hungary, and even China. Reviews are very good. Now you can order and via the Internet

Fishing with livers

A tip to help keep livers on your hook, use panty hose. Cut them into 2 or 3 inch sections tie the ends up, put your liver in hose, thread on hook. You will usually get several cast out of one liver. Also if you can find them but rooster livers, they are tougher and will not desolve or sling off the hook as easy.

i fish the missouri river

i fish the missouri river near omaha have good luck with just canned corn have caught hundreds of carp anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds and channel cats from 5 to 20 pounds a tip throw a hanfull of corn in the water right in front of you near the shore and another in front of you farther out then bait up and quickly put in a good rod holder and try to get your second line in many times ill have fish on before i get the second one in lots of times i end up using only one pole cause it gets hectic with 2 seems like if i look away for a second or baiting a hook bam! poles bent down hard with the drag screaming. are these fish playin me like a fiddle? i think yes what a rush! tip 2 when your not getting bites look around the shore for bugs or whatever moves cause these are things those fish have been eating big yellow grasshoppers are good bait i found a big praying mantis last time i went 3 minutes in the water i nearly got my rod yanked out of my hand it was a 35 pound flathead cat! so try whatever you see anything works too hot dogs, leftovers from dinner any meat any! caught a 15 pound channel cat last week on a piece of leftover pork chop!who knew? a 22 pound flathead on a piece of fresh garlic that i had mixed with hot dogs had corn on my hook and put the garlic on there too for the hell of it i thought to myself daaammm these fish eat anything this late summer and fall river fishing has been the best ! god bles all who enjoy this awesome sport. good luck and keep eyes open for unlikely baits. peace out

Fishing tips

Use old knee high panty hose. Don't Wash em. You want them to smell like stinky feet. Cut into bout five inch sections. Tie or sew up one end to close. Put chicken livers or any bait you are having trouble keeping on hook. Tie up open end, put it on hook you are ready to go. You won't loose your bait

Most accurate weather checks of all.

In North Texas, we have

In North Texas, we have recently discovered that small pieces of McDonald's Chicken McNuggets are really good bait for catfish !!! Sounds crazy, but it works!!

I am from Minnesota land of

I am from Minnesota land of 10,000 lakes i am a walleye fisherman where it takes a lifetime of knowledge to produce fish and not everyone can do it. cats are what we call trash can fish if you tried bringing stinkbait around here you wouldnt be allowed in the boat the fish are a lil smarter up here you have to learn the enviroment and ecosystem for each lake understand and know that depth and presentation for every lure in your box to trigger a strike its not the same as just chunking a big stinky piece of whatever out there and waiting we work for our fish not tryn to put anyone down by any means just sayn its two different worlds and ifyou ever ate some good walleye or even crappie or perch out of some cold water you would prob not think so much about cats but whatever floats ur boat that what we say good luck to all of you

if you don't have anything nice to say

Wow! You must be a really smart fellow Donald, I've heard that Minnesota fish are awfully smart also. I don't usually post comments but reading your post made me sad. I don't fish for catfish either but I don't see the need to criticize or belittle others that do. You should try to just enjoy fishing and let others do the same. Good luck in life, try not to fall out of the boat.

I appreciate his comment and

I appreciate his comment and as he said it wasnt meant to belittle anyone unlike you trying to silence free speach just because you were offended by misperception mostly likely because you probably catch crappy...we are tryin to enjoy fishin but drama queens keep getting offended...some how fate will have tou with out the boat haba

CATFISH..........

GROWING UP & COMING FROM A FISHING FAMILY I MOSTLY ATE CRAPPIE & SUNFISH (MISSISSIPPI).........WHEN I WAS IN MY 60'S THEY HAD A FAMILY REUNION AT A CORP OF ENGINEERS PARK IN KANSAS.......THEY ONLY FISHED FOR CATFISH......IT TOOK TWO MEN TO CARRY THEM.....HUGE. .....HAD MY FIRST TASTE OF FRESH CATFISH AND WAS ACTUALLY DREADING IT.........HOWEVER, I AM HOOKED AND ALL I CAN SAY IS YUM. ...THAT IS THE ONLY FISH I DESIRE ANYMORE.......STILL EAT OTHER FISH HERE IN THE NORTH..........THEIR LAKES DO NOT SEEM TO HAVE ANY CATFISH & I AM NOT INTO NOODLING TO FIND OUT. WENT TO A PAY AS YOU CATCH PLACE AND CAUGHT A CATFISH..........MY ADVICE......DON'T GO THERE.......TASTE IS NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING. WANT TO MOVE BACK DOWN SOUTH, AND GET MY FILL BEFORE I MEET MY MAKER........GRANNY

i never took up fishing until

i never took up fishing until last summer... Im 33. Odd but true. My best friend (a 66 year old hillbilly good ol boy from west virginia) taught me how to fish. We fish for all kinds but the majority of our fishing is for 3-12 lb channel cats. His house is on a small river in west michigan called the thornapple. I read a lot about what people use for bait and a few mentioned channel cats "almost never bite on live bait"... As the old hillbilly would say.... "Im hear to tell yah!! You can catch any cat you want on raw sucker!" And a year later he couldnt be more right! We recently started using live bluegill and catch them like crazy. But other than worms and bluegill... Raw sucker! If the moon phase is right and they will bite... Its the sure thing. When we fish (5 out of 7 days or nights a week) we know step one is catch a sucker and cut it up. Best part, we catch 4-5 cats per bait because the skin on a sucker is almost impossible to get off the big hooks.

Anyways... Food for thought guys and gals. And the comment about different areas hold dif names for each kind of cat... Well played. What real fisherman would want anything but good things for a fellow fisherman or woman?! No good can come from slammin someone for what they call a fish. Call it a damn sea otter if thats what you wanna call it!

Happpy fishin everyone and all the best from david and tommy,
HILLBILLY HEAVEN, MI

May God bless you and your

May God bless you and your hill billy friend from west Virginia! I to am a West Virginia girl who has relocated to the deep south on the mobile bay. I was on this post trying to remember what my grandpa would say about fishing. I'm 31. My son is seven and he just wants to wet a line any chance he gets! My husbands grandpa always had two things in his bathroom: the good book and the farmers almanac. Haha. Both have guided my life.
Give your hill billy friend a hug from a fellow hill billy. He may be too tough for it... I know how those wv boys are, maybe settle for a quiet nod, short lived eye contact from the low brim of a wvu hat and then directly back to fishing.... That's our quiet way of understanding.

CATFISH..........

YOU REALLY MADE ME SET UP AND TAKE NOTICE........BEEN FISHING SINCE I WAS 8......NEVER TASTED CATFISH TILL I WAS IN MY 60'S (KANSAS). ....WE LIVED IN OKLA........(ATE, CRAPPIE, BASS,ETC.), SAME IN MISSISSIPPI, ARKANSAS, & THEN WE MOVED HERE TO MICHIGAN......HOWEVER, NOW I AM CRAVING CATFISH & THOROUGHLY BELIEVED THERE WERE NO KEEPERS IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN. NOW YOU HAVE MADE ME START TO DROOL AGAIN AND HOPEFULLY THE ONES YOU CATCH ARE KEEPER SIZE...THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME SET UP AND TAKE NOTICE.

Read the comments and agree

Read the comments and agree with most. But my cat fishing advice is to start with good gear, set drag loose and adjust tighter to set the hook. This doesn't alarm the fish. Slip weights on medium line/heavy leader. I use bait holder hooks with barbed back shanks, keeps bait on great. And my absolute #1 bait is chunks of bloody beef liver! It stinks when fresh and stays on with my hardest casts and sometimes I can catch more than one fish per bait. Listen to a Catheadedfool!

I been fishing the nearby

I been fishing the nearby reservoir in south central Texas. With the lake going over the spillway and the gates open full blast it's the perfect storm to try anything you ever thought of using. Fighting to get a spot I cast out and boom got a channel cat. Baited back up and though out and boom a miss. This literally went on from 8a.m. to around noonish. Everyone ask what I was using, they acted surprise/shocked when I told them. good old fashion home grown night crawlers, not store bought they wouldn't bite as good.
DOUGH BAIT recipe-100%. Brand flakes crushed by hand pretty fine add dr. Pepper until able to form a ball. (Works Great On catching huge carp/buffalo.

DOUGH BAIT works awesome aswell In still water. DOUGH BAIT recipe

Here in WV catfish will bite

Here in WV catfish will bite anything. When we were young, my cousin and I ran out of bait. She took the chewing gum out of her mouth and put it on the hook....caught a big cat. The bass bite on what they are used to eating. Meal worms catch bluegill and the bluegill bring the big bass. I'm speaking of farm ponds.

I have found using McDonalds

I have found using McDonalds french fries and chunks of their filet -o- fish sandwich's will really get a good bite going. Just toss them in the water out in front of you and catch all you want.

I've found that the best way

I've found that the best way to keep liver on your hook is, take a piece of "new" panty hose, put the liver in it, and put it on the hook. Happy fishing!!!

This practice is not legal in

This practice is not legal in most states. Panty hose is not biodegradable and can kill off uncaught fish

Just use a 6 inch piece of

Just use a 6 inch piece of braided line or thread wrap around just below eye of hook then wrap around your liver ..you can throw it as hard as you want wont come off

Elastic thread is best just

Elastic thread is best just wrap it around hook and bait then rip off no need to tie

I live in lacrosse Wisconsin

I live in lacrosse Wisconsin and have been fishing my whole life. Honestly the best catfishing I have ever done was in the dead of such.her at the Chippewa flowage in Hayward wi all I use is a whole night crawler on bottom let it sit and sure enough they will be caught. At the moment itsvery cloudy and rained last night and I still can't sit at home without thinking about going out. What is the best bait for raining over cloud days?

Deer hunters.... Deer liver

Deer hunters.... Deer liver and hearts (if You dont eat um) works great for cat fish.

I have used lantern mantels for tieing on liver and dough bait.also in ariz. I used hotdogs worked real good

In central Texas, I have

In central Texas, I have found the Live Helga bugs found under rocks, on creek banks works exceptionally well for cat fishing. Don't tell Allen I gave up our fishing secret.

I have seen the cat fishing

I have seen the cat fishing suggestions and have one more for liver. I tie it on the hook and line with thin elastic thread and have for year's. Adapted from ocean fishing. I can then cast it as far as I can and have no problem getting fish also. Also shrimp work well too.

We LOVE to fish, throwing our

We LOVE to fish, throwing our poles into any body of water, along shores.
Live in central Oklahoma. My Dad, his Dad before him, all were Commercial Fishermen, from WA. state, spending long months in Alaska, the Bering Seas. My Dad was from Norway, I am very proud to be a Norwegian. Just as he loved fishing, his 'little girl' grew up, also loved to fish. (Catching is another story, LOL)

As a child, I often stayed on the boat, until it reached the Ballard Locks. The Locks Guard, would lift me off the boat, walking me across, the closed gateway.

I stood crying, waving "bye, bye" as my Dad's boat, was lowered down, then heading for Alaska. Sweet memories!

Love to fish for catfish love

Love to fish for catfish love the fight they put up now just need some help I've been hearing that catfish love shrimp now here we go do I use garlic or plain shrimp my buddy told Me to keep in mind that garlic for everything is that true?

I use shrimp and do not put

I use shrimp and do not put anything on them. I have fished for 60 years and have always used large plain shrimp. I caught one using a hot dog too. Good luck fishing.

Isnt it hard to justify using

Isnt it hard to justify using something that costs $7 a pound, to catch something that costs $3 a pound?

No it's not hard to justify

No it's not hard to justify using a bait that cost $7 per pound, while trying to catch a fish worth $3 per pound. How many $3 per pound fish can you catch using simply $7 for 1 pound of bait? If you only manage to catch 1 fish that's 3 pounds it's paid for right? Besides, maybe the enjoyment of fishing doesn't have a price tag.

I love to fish for catfish to

From your comment you said you were fishing 7 hrs until 3pm and hit the pond after that.My guess and all the others may know better was you hit the pond at or right before sundown at feeding time or with a smaller stocked pond? either way congrats on the great fishing.

my dad showed me to just to

my dad showed me to just to use a treble hook with sun dried chicken liver or stink bait kinda like peanut butter and make a ball to cover the entire hook add a barrel sinker and a swivel about 3' about that and sink it to the bottom ,give it some slack so the bait floats above the weight. But that worked in kansas but now I'm in Washington State where trout, steelhead, salmon and sturgeon are the most caught. My choice is channel cat and steelhead but need some help to find those channel cats here.Anyone?

The way we have always baited

The way we have always baited a hook for Catfish is to take a pair of panty hose, stretch it around the liver and tie it in a ball with fishing string.

Something my sister noticed

Something my sister noticed is to fill up your gas tank the night before you go fishing. If you fill it up in the morning you'll have a hard time getting a bite!

This is true, if I gas up on

This is true, if I gas up on the way to the lake i'm very carefull not to get fuel on my hands.. If I do I wash them before I touch any bait.. Rub a little fishstick or smelly jelly on my hands..

If you are between Big Sur

If you are between Big Sur and Pescadero Ca from now until July 10th you should use Squid for bait as they are hatching and the fish will go crazy for them. Also sunrise/ sunset and after the new moon are best times. After mid july best fishing changes to full moon at sunset. I grew up in the Monterey Bay and this was what people catching the fish did. Happy Fishing!!

OK I need some help. My friend and I went fishing and caught nothing. I told him about fish having a cycle that went from head to tail fin that affected their bite. It coincided with the lunar cycle. He thought I was pulling his leg. I thought it used to be in an old almanac.

I need some help finding this as true or a chart that shows it or something.

TOOTSIE ROLLS have worked

TOOTSIE ROLLS have worked wonders in catching catfish for me and others. Brought two poles to use, had baited one, tossed it out and before the other was baited, the first one hit. Brought it in and tossed the other out...BAM again. Had no choice but to put one rod to the side...Within an hour,I had caught my limit. I was suggested using TOOTSIE ROLLS when I was young and haven't had a reason to change yet. If you decide to use them...warm them up in your hand, roll up in a worm shape to put on single hook...or for a treble hook, connect from point to point.

Keep reading comments,

Keep reading comments, questions; and, most importantly, reply; and, then read some more; always good advice to follow, y'all know that! I'm an old bat (baseball fan); love Texas (Rangers too); but not if they try to beat my Giants (SF, that is); however, Tigers were fine (grew up in Michigan) ... been to one lake there, by night ... to and from some great eatin' place by boat too.

Watch the lovely ladies; catch the big ones, but if rare, throw them back for the next person or game fish/fisherman who needs that trophy more than you. Born in '47 ... you? Life's a journey! ... enjoy the ride!

Catfish vary in diet by

Catfish vary in diet by species. Mud cats and flatheads feed on bottom and eat stinky baits. Channel cats along with Blue cats are predators and eat largely minnows (shad)perch, bass, stripped bass etc. I was watching my poles when a blue surfaced and swallowed a coot!! A week later I caught a 48 lbs blue. He could swallow a whole apple. The one that swallowed the coot had to be 80 or 90 + lbs. There are some big catfish out there!! Search for a fish producing lake then watch the OLD fishermen.

Need to Know more about CAT

Need to Know more about CAT FISH before posting false information.Flatheads and Blues are the predators!

I beg to differ. My family

I beg to differ. My family and myself catch chanels on live bait all the time. It's not that thwy aren't predatory. They just aren't as picky.

This is true to an extent.

This is true to an extent. All cats at a young age scavenge
But as they age their diets change to live bait. Yes you can catch all cats on stink baits and livers. But your best chance for the bigger cats is a live or large cut bait. Some are pickier than others. Once they have grown their diets should consist of mainly live fish. Location, gear and presentation are of most importance. Best of luck to all of you.

First of all a flathead is

First of all a flathead is the same thing as a mud cat...also called a yellow cat.Second flatheads eat almost exclusively live prey. Blues eat mostly live prey aso but will eat some trash. Channels eat trash and much less live prey. Odd they are the best to eat but they are. This is why you catch channel on stinkbait, liver, etc...never heard of anyone catch in a flathead on danny kings punch bait. There's been a lot caught on trotlines baited with perch though. Some people amaze me with some of the $#%* they come up with

I'm afraid you may be wrong.

I'm afraid you may be wrong. I caught a 30lb flat head on a cool cat worm and catch them all the time on liver. I think it depends on the area you are fishing. I am in Mississippi and fish on Ross Barnett Reservoir. I RARELY catch any cat on minnows or any type of FISH bait. Mainly catch them on worms, chicken or beef liver. And catch all different types on these 3 baits.

your right i think on any

your right i think on any given day those flatheads bite on all kinds of bait i fish missouri river in ne caught them on hot dogs leftover pork chop canned corn grasshopper i caught a 35 pounder on a very large praying mantis. have caught channel cats on a ripe mullberry so anything goes. there was a mullberry tree at rivers edge dropping ripe ones in the water and wondered if any fish eat those .well i now know channel cats do. well godbless and good luck fishin.

I'm afraid you have put you

I'm afraid you have put you boot in your mouth. A flathead is not a Mud cat. Mud cat do not grow big at all. And flatheads are huge. I'm pretty sure that you are an idiot.

Mud cat is simply a secondary

Mud cat is simply a secondary name for chanel cat. Look it up. You're all idiots

I've also had a lot of people

I've also had a lot of people tell me you can't catch blue cats or flatheads without live bait. That's bogus information. Last summer I caught a 20lb flathead and just last week caught a 12lb blue. Both on stink bait

bait for catfish

My husbands uncle taught us how to make stink bait years ago he would be catching them as fast as he could get them off the hook. He used Long Horn cheddar cheese and cow brains, This stuff is really potent. He welded a old beater from an old hand held mixer to a piece of rod metal that would fit into the mixer he put equal cheese and cow brains. we used an old pot and mixed these together and covered with cheese cloth and left it outside to ferment for about a week. Then we put the mixture in quart jars . the longer you kept it the better it was. Make sure you keep a tight lid on it, if you don't the flies will blow it and ruin your bait. after it has set for a week it is ready. we got a sponge from a store that has sea sponge you need this one it holds the bait really well, cut sponge about the size of a quarter put it on the hook and hide your sponge. wet your sponge in water you're fishing in squeeze out the water. put it in the jar and use a stick or something to make sure it is completely soaked in the mixture. this works best in running water river or creek. it will work in ponds also but not as well as the other. We always catch a ton of fish with this stuff. whatever you do don't get this stuff on you or your clothes because he smell will stay on you forever. my brother went fishing with my husband and I in mid February and when I cast out it hit him is the back, his wife threw his shirt away and made him scrub down out in the cold.!! This is better than anything they sell , you will catch all you want that's for sure! Good Luck!

Homemade catfish food

I forgot we live in Texas, down on the Coast and go fishing in East Texas and rivers in the south. Plenty Of Big Cats From Blue Channel Which We Love To Fish For to Big Yellow Cats. Mud catfish gets their name from the way they taste They have a strong taste and aren't that good to eat.

Here in Florida a mud cat has

Here in Florida a mud cat has very sharp, big teeth. Do not, and I repeat, do not put your hand in their mouth.

Growing up in Fl just below

Growing up in Fl just below the Okefenokee swamp, mud cats are nothing close to flatheads, channel, or blues. They may get up to a lb. I've stuck my finger in thousands of their throats to get my hook back and never wore a scare. I'm sorry but those that think different, I'm willing to take ya catchin' to prove it.

Blue and flats have small

Blue and flats have small needle like teeth but nothing like Gars or Bass

Could it be possible that

Could it be possible that nobody is wrong at all, with regards to which correct cat name is which. In fact, everyone could be right - meaning that what is known to be a mud cat over at that certain place; small in size and weight, might very well be the same fish, just goes by a different l'il ole name, that's all.
For instance, I'm from Polk County, FL, not all that far from the Okeechobee area, and our mud cats are far from being anything small! And we call 'em "mud fish". And let me tell you something, that fish right there will give you a fight if you are willing or able to bring it in. And mean mean mean! And they have a mouth full of sharp teeth that will chomp down on anything that happens to make it's way in. And the mud fish around here can get up to enormous proportions.

That was so not nice to call

The fact of the matter is that game fish eat other fish, I use hand size bream as bait to catch 50lbs + catfish and wall hanging bass. Use their natural food source and ya can't go wrong. May your stringers & live wells stay loaded, good luck.

The best way to keep liver

The best way to keep liver bait on the hook is to get some Bait Baggies off ebay, You can make some awesome baits with them. Hope they come out in stores soon but right now I just see them on ebay. No hassles or problems. You can make up your baits before you go fishing, let them season a few days if you want. I've made liver baits and sardine baits and cheese baits, They are the way to go for bait fishermen. I'll never use anything else.

All I ever use are night

All I ever use are night crawlers. But before I throw them in, I spray them down with WD-40. Works for me.

DONT USE WD40 YOU WILL NOT

DONT USE WD40 YOU WILL NOT CATCH ANYTHING AND WD40 IS AGAINST THE LAW IT WILL KILL FISH

Wd40 is made with fish oil.

Wd40 is made with fish oil.

What a Fish story! Myth:

What a Fish story!

Myth: WD-40 contains fish oil.

Fact:
Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish. Sorry Charlie®, it just ain’t so.

WD-40 Company has taken steps to respect and conserve the environment, and encourages its users to do the same. While WD-40 can be used to help protect fishing equipment from rust and corrosion, WD-40 Company does not recommend using WD-40 to attract fish.

http://wd40.com/about-us/myths...

Sir, as an avid steelhead

Sir, as an avid steelhead fisher-person, I can say you are 100% correct! WD-40 kept my lures, even ancient ones, owned back toward the middle of last century (1900, that is), safe, un-rusty; and most importantly, made those fresh-water seeking spawners and egg-layers angry!

I'm an ecologist, by training, BTW, so I know all the technical terms too.

Maybe u and the other experts

Maybe u and the other experts ur talking about should get out of ur office, grab a pole, a bucket of minnows and head to the lake, and don't forget that can of wd-40. Then reply back to me and tell me it doesn't attract fish. Happy fishing to ya'll!

I have used WD-40 on rubber

I have used WD-40 on rubber worms at night as scent for largemouths...and it works. Best to use with no moon...top water buzz baits with a full moon...reeled as sloooow as possible.

W-D 40 is made from fish oil,

W-D 40 is made from fish oil, it will not kill fish, and when crappie fishing and you have a bucket of minnows that aren't very active, put one on your hook, I always hook mine in the tail area, squirt a little w-d on him ànd watch him and the crappie come to life. Works every time down here in Texas.

The one and only time I set

The one and only time I set out a trotline in Lake 'o the Pines in east Texas, I used Ivory soap. Leave it in the sun for a day or two and you can cut it into cubes. In one week I caught so many 18 to 20 inch cats, I had to give them away 'cause I didn't have a place to store them after cleaning.

My Grandfather's nickname was

My Grandfather's nickname was "Catfish". That's all his friends called him. Starting at 4 years old (now 78)he taught me how to Catfish. The ONLY bait we ever used was fish entrails. The local fish market would save him buckets of entrails weekly. After a long time they started selling them as fish bait. Hold tight, don't lose your ROD! Rick Woody

Really...buckets of bait

Really...buckets of bait weekly..buckets? sounds like a fish story.

It doesn't sound like a fish

It doesn't sound like a fish story to me. Here on Lake Texoma, the place to catch a lot of large catfish is next to the fish cleaning stations the fishing guides use in the marinas. They throw all the entrails and heads in the water at these stations and the catfish congregate there. Must be the entrails they are eating.

It's true Woody. I've put

Fish with the sun in your

Fish with the sun in your face. Fish know a shadow on water means danger. Catch a grasshopper. Put a bread twisty through the eye of the hook on your line. Twist the grasshopper on without sticking in the hook. Do not twist too tight, do not kill it. Cast softly into deep still water with no weight or bobber, just line, hook, twisty and grasshopper. He will kick and bring up a big one. Kids love catching grasshoppers almost as much as fishing and then want to fish some more.

Brother,
The striper is not a dumb fish by any means. Use a 3-way swivel with a long bait drop. Flourocarbon line is great, they can't see it, up to 17 lb. or so. Make your sinker drop about 2 feet and the hook 4-5. Live shad are best. Hook them in the bone behind the eye, they'll live form a good while. They need to be swimming and be presented naturally.

An alternative to using

An alternative to using pantyhose for chicken liver....Is get one of those shower sponges the ruffled puff things work wonders for holding chicken livers..I use about a 2 inch square and put the liver in and tie up with fishing line ill make about 2 dozen before I head out to the water works great....Once unraveled around 4 ft long just cut into strips...Works great

Instead of Using Chicken

Instead of Using Chicken Liver (Which is very hard to keep on the Hook) I use Beef or Either Pork Liver,They are alot tougher & stay on the Hook alot Better & Catfish Love It:)

The best way I've used

The best way I've used chicken livers is to put them on a treble hook in an old ice cube tray. Freeze them over night and crack the tray like you were getting ice out, they'll thaw slowly so they stay on a long time.

In your haste, to post a

In your haste, to post a snarky reply, you missed the point. They plainly stated that they used shrimp that was going to be thrown out. That would infer that it had gone bad. This would make it very cheap and very stinky. That is a solid combination for catfish bait.

Out here in Idaho we use sucker as cut bait yup wanna big catfish use sucker!!

Here in Southern West

Here in Southern West Virginia we fish in slow moving shallow rivers. There are a lot of bends in the rivers, and deep holes. Mostly flatheads, and channels. Blues are in the bigger rivers up north. The best bait to use are live minnows on a slip egg sinker. Creek chub, shiner or whatever you catch. TIP: Take scissors, and cut the top half of his tail fin off. Reason 1: puts a blood trail in the water. Reason 2: The bait struggles, and because you trimmed the top half of the fin; when he trys to swim foward his tail will automatically push him up from the bottom. Making him a very noticable snack! WHAM!!!!!!!!!!!

Where I grew up in the middle

Where I grew up in the middle of Virginia....I would go down to the rail road river trestle and put a piece of sliced cheese(1"x1" square) on a barbed hook with a bobber set at about 3-4' in depth....I would put the bobber in between the pilings in the middle of the river(22' deep) and just wait.....the bobber would slowly just start to sink.....and lo & behold....I would catch blues, flatheads, mud cats and other assorted fish!!! The hotter the day.....the better the cheese would work....just let it set out and dry in the sun....it would get hard and of course smell that much more pungent.

As strange as it sounds, we

As strange as it sounds, we used to use softer brands of dry dog food to catch catfish at a few ponds in the DFW area of Texas.
We used treble hooks and fished on the bottom with weighted lines and occasionally with bobbers if we got bored.
We never did find one dog food that worked better than others...it usually depended on how hungry the catfish were and if we were in the right place at the right time (just like any fishing!).
I did try baiting out a creek or two with a full bag of the dog food in a medium to large sized mesh bag from onions or potatoes. That worked out pretty good! The creeks were at the "bottom" part of the lake on the map, if that made any difference.
Channel cats and the mud cats seemed to like the dog food best. We also used hot dogs quite often. Good luck, y'all!

Another good trick with

Another good trick with canned dog food is to punch holes all around the can. Then tie a line attached to a marker buoy. With this method, your "chum" stays concentrated in one local area (defined by the buoy) and the fish can't fill up on just the chum. Also by attaching the buoy, when done fishing, you can pull up the can thus maintaining clean fishing environments.

best way to fish on the river

best way to fish on the river is to keep your bait alive after you hook it so always hook your bait in front of tail fin. remember in day perch are in the open and at night they hide in coves and in morning theyre in rocks and weed

Yeah. I was once fishing for

Yeah. I was once fishing for bass on Bessie's Creek in Brookshire, Texas. A terrible storm came up. I was using an 8 inch Broken Back Mirror lure and made one last cast and retrieved it parallel to the grass line When WHAM ! At first I thought it was a bass but it kept running my drag hard. Well it finally turned around. Believe me I didn't turn it around, I was using 10lb test and am surprised it didn't break. She kept swimming towards me and went under an old wooden bridge with fallen pilings. I jumped in the creek to wanagle her around the obstacles, ever so diligently as not to break the line. When she came up she literally scared me. She was a 55 pound channel cat. I finally gilled her and rushed home. It was storming remember? On a giant top-water lure being reeled in at lightning speed. Such fun. On Lake Conroe I was wade fishing and I cast a chartreuse, willow leaf, spinner bate into about 4 inches of water and caught a 17 lb male Florida bass. In Sam Rayburn reservoir, I caught a 7 lb spawning bass....in...a tree stump. I missed my mark casting, but caught her anyways. I wished I could have seen my eyes when I did that. My advice is to go bass fishing. You may end up catching the biggest catfish ever. Ha ha.

For Catfish we use what is

For Catfish we use what is called cut and gut, it is fresh caught, cut up peices of Gizzard Shad meat and the gut of the shad combined on the hook. You can catch the Shad in a throw net. Best is to catch the Shad from the same lake you are fishing

Big fast smart TroutIn ct at baldwins pond in meriden, you should use a sliding weight with a size 4 hook and yellow powerbait. on the bottom of the waterfall use no weight or bobber and use meal worm on a size 6 hook and drop it right down and you will defitely catch a 13+ in trout right there. The trout are tricky but be prepared.

Now that Spring is here, with

Now that Spring is here, with spawning and post-spawning times are near, it's best to fish the shallow warm waters that attract the forage.

I *think* the north shores warm first, but I may mistaken.

Remember the food chain:

1. wind stirs up the water and frees plankton.

2. Minnows feed on on plankton.

3. Wind shakes insects free from the water vegetation.

3. Smaller forage fish and smaller game fish eat the insects.

4. Larger game fish feed on forage and smaller game fish.

5. The plankton, insects, and minnows are up against the wall--the windward sides of the bar, the drop-off, the bank, the weedbeds.

Choose your lures according to the hatch, the forage, and the species you're after.

Regarding 'when water is

Regarding 'when water is rippled or still.' You can count on the water in high mountain lakes to be rippled, still or churned. I have discovered windy conditions and churned waters overall to be beneficial fishing over the years.

I believe it is best to fish the other end of the lake where the winds have pushed and churned nutrients to the corner of a lake, outlet/inlet/cove in other words fishing against the wind. My success rate of catching fish in this manner has increased significantly throughout the years.

My years of buying lure du jour have all but come to an end based on observation and usage of lure(s). When fishing mountain lakes, small ponds, streams, rivers, inner city lakes and lakes in general I have discovered that carrying a small pocket-size tackle box with two lures in quantity catches many species albeit carp, catfish, trout, bass, crappie, bluegill, salmon, walleye, pike.

I'm not out to catch the biggest or the most fish inasmuch as I am willing to gain another experience in the great outdoors by keeping it pragmatically simple.

Good post here, I totally agree with you on the wind. It oxygenates the water as well. Certain species like Walleye and Hybrid Striped Bass absolutely love the big waves

To keep stink bait or liver

To keep stink bait or liver on your hook, cut a small square of material from a pair of women's pantyhose. Run your hook through one corner, then wrap once around your bait and hook the other corner. The pantyhose material let scent out, but keep the bait on your hook. Works great on catfish.

For catfishing, I use to use

For catfishing, I use to use nightcrwlaers and and goldfish. My Uncle and I discovered a dip bait method. We went to Wal-Mart and bought Premo Original Super Sticky Dip Bait. We tried that a few times and it worked out great. Then we got the bright Idea to Mix the Dip Bait with Majic Bait chicken liver formula. We'd put the Magic Bait on the treble hook and dip it in the Premo. I tell you what we can't keep out lines in the water long enough to relax. I also use Majic Bait Nightcrwler formula by its self. Good Luck and have fun.

Always get to know your

Always get to know your fishing hole and it's surrounding ecosystem. For instance, in a creek I used to fish in as a child the fish refused to bite on the night-crawlers we bought from the bait store. We went without a bite until my dad found a green worm in the creek bank. It was then that I learned to use what the fish were naturally feeding on as bait. Plus the green worms smelled really terrible, adding to the effect and imprint left in my memory. I see many posts remarking on the wonders of liver, and one recommendation I have is to use a snap swivel (or just tie your line back on each re-bait) and a treble hook so you can easily release the hook, thus sticking the largest center point directly on the hook post and position it so it won't just flip off on your first cast. Liver is good bait, and if the fish aren't biting at least you won't go hungry.

Using a pantyhose for your

Using a pantyhose for your liver is the best way. Also, if you can use hearts, either chicken (rabbit's are great), you'll be able to catch the big ones!

To use liver try getting a

To use liver try getting a piece of your wife's stockings or a piece of her pantyhose (the foot portion works best) . Insert the piece of liver in the hose tie a knot in it and thread the whole concoction on your hook. Be sure to cut off any excess material. The hose lets the fish bite and the scent escape but does not let the water or fish steal your bait.

I agree this does work best!

I agree this does work best! Be sure to put your treble hook on first before tying. You can use fishing line to tie. You can also use "chicken" hearts, if you can get enough. They are tougher, and have more flavor, too.

The fish is going to die if i do catch it, he is danged if i do, and danged if i don't

Can a bass digest a 4oz

Can a bass digest a 4oz lunker lure ? How about the plastic rigs used for sqeeze baits ? When I was a kid, i had a Redbone hound pass a complete dishrag. I have seen large car parts from the inside of Sharks while caught alive. This ban sounds like a new way to make money by fines if you get caught. What's next? How about a bad shot on a deer by bullet or arrow? ban bullets and arrows? Trapping, check your trap and have only a leg, animal going to live or die? Come on now, you can catch and chop up a fish, usually alive and use it for bait, but pantyhose may kill one if you don't catch it? Brilliant thinking, I bet some state lawmakers made and spent big money thinking this up. When a pair of pantyhose are no longer wearable, what are they good for? What is the lifespan for pantyhose? Like I said earlier, make the pantyhose biodegradable, landfills and fishermen happy.

We started using simple

We started using simple sewing thread. Set a few peices of your liver out and let it become a little dry/firm, you know it kinda forms a skin on it. Snatch you off a peice of thread 12 - 15 inches long, maybe more if you like. Put your liver on the hook as normal then tie it to the hook by wrapping the thread around and around being sure to cover all angles and cautious not to pull too tight pulling through the liver. Normally even after loosing your bait from the fish biting, the string stays on the hook. Sometimes you can use the same peice a couple times and it is less harmfull to the fish. We keep a couple cheap spools in the tackle box aand use the finger off an old stretchable glove as a cover to keep it tidy and not tangled in everything else. Happy Fishing, hope this tip helps.

Panty hose are horrible for

Panty hose are horrible for the fish, its a terrible idea and illegal in most states, panty hose do not break down, a broken line usually leads to a dead fish.. Not a very good plan if you want your children to fish the same lakes your fishing today.

no panty hose,just keep

no panty hose, just keep trowing all that lead in there. Any new homes being built around your fishing area is great also.We had a large fish kill from subdivisions being built, the termite treatment in the ground made it to the lakes after a few rains. It took them a little while to figure that one out. Also lets not build anymore piers from the chemical treated lumber. Come on now, a small patch of panty hose in the Tennessee river? You are probably one of those persons, i mean peta persons that want to ban fishing anyway, hooking them in the lips is cruel. Broken line ? maybe , but im after the big ones, I use 50lb line, haven't broken it yet. Get rich, invent biodegradable panty hose,or build small wire basket, put liver inside, with hook on outside, made onto basket. If line breaks, fish will look better with basket on his face, and probably won't die. Lets keep it real with whats trashing our waterways.
