The Old Farmer’s Almanac January Monthly features good food ideas for your best intentions!

The holidays have passed—and now you are starting to regret all of the fudge, cookies, pies, and other indulgences that you enjoyed. It is no wonder that statistics show that close to 40 percent of us who make New Year’s resolutions will rate losing weight and eating healthier as a top priority.

The basic tenets of a healthy diet, endorsed by many health associations and societies, remain the same:

  • Eat a variety of fruit, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and vegetables.
  • Eat moderate amounts of lean protein and keep fats and sweets to a minimum.

Although this sounds simple, we all know that it is not easy to do this every day. But small changes can yield big results. Try the following tasty, easy-to-prepare recipes full of fruit, vegetables, lean meats, and seafood.

Fruit and Wheat Germ Smoothie
Pack this quick, fruity drink in a thermos for breakfast on the go.

1 cup low-fat plain yogurt
1 cup fresh or frozen blackberries
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
½ cup cranberry or grape juice
2 tablespoons wheat germ

Put all of the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator. Makes 2 servings.
