of weather and environment news

by Janice Stillman

One of my favorite email subscriptions is the bi-weekly delivery from earth observatory. Stunning images, topographic maps, and data from places and events around the world are accompanied by clear commentary that puts the pictures in historic and scientific context, and includes links for deeper understanding.

If you haven't the space in your head to absorb it all (my challenge at times!) just click on the pics. It is fascinating and fun.

Today's news, for example, includes

1) the effects of sulfur dioxide emitted from Kilauea Volcano Volcano on Hawaii's big island in April 2008

2) Los Angeles at night, with the city's lights indicating the influence of terrain on urban growth

3) the impact of recent flooding along the White River in Arkansas, compared with the same view under normal conditions

4) a bird's-eye view of Cerro (Spanish for hill) Culiacan, part of the Michoacán-Guanajuato volcanic field of west-central Mexico

5) fire smoke from out-of-control fires burned in Brazil's Parana River floodplain

And that's just a few. You can also peruse the archive.
