Cleaning, Polishing, and Freshening Your Bathroom

Bathroom

To clean your bathroom, use items straight from the pantry! From a toilet bowl cleaner to tub, tile, and shower cleaners, here are some our favorite homemade bathroom cleaners.

Two essential elements for a happy marriage: Separate checking accounts and separate bathrooms.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

  • Sprinkle baking soda into the bowl, then drizzle with vinegar and scour with a toilet brush. This combination cleans and deodorizes.

Fiberglass Tub and Shower

  • Make a paste of baking soda and water.
  • Wet the surface of the tub or shower stall; gently rub with the paste on a sponge or soft nylon brush.
  • Rinse thoroughly. Never use an abrasive cleaner (such as common scouring powder), any abrasive scouring pad, steel wool, or a scraper.

Tub and Tile

  • Sprinkle baking soda in place of scouring powder in your tub or on the tiles. Rub with a damp sponge. Rinse Thoroughly.
  • To remove film buildup on bathtubs, apply full-strength vinegar to a sponge and wipe the area. Next, use baking soda as you would scouring powder. Rub with a damp sponge and rinse thoroughly.
  • Vinegar removes most dirt without scrubbing and doesn’t leave a film. Use ¼ cup (or more) vinegar to 1 gallon water.
  • To clean grout, put 3 cups baking soda into a medium-size bowl and add 1 cup warm water. Mix into a smooth paste and scrub into grout with a sponge or toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and dispose of leftover paste when finished.

Not original with me, but one of the best bathroom cleaners is Dawn and white vinegar mixed in equal parts in a spray bottle. Spray on surfaces and wipe with damp cloth. Over time, even the worst soap scum will be
removed.

Bar-keepers friend worked on ridding my grimy bathtub of flower and butterfly decals and most of the stains. I used gloves and an old toothbrush and razor blade. The stains came back eventually, so spring cleaning is due soon.

I inherited a streaked glass door in a house I recently moved into. I have tried most commercial glass cleaners, coffee filters. Probably should try vinegar next.

Borax is great for a lot of stuff. If you have a flea infestation, sprinkle it on your rugs before you leave in the morning, vacuum it up when you get home at night and do it again the next day. WAY better than those poisonous and awful smelling sprays. Use it along with baking soda!

GREAT tips - thanks so much

GREAT tips - thanks so much for sharing these. Personally, I've been using a Grout cleaner I picked up at home depot, called Aqua Mix by Custom - still, I'll try the baking soda suggestion as you stated too - but I don't know if it can work better than what i'm already using LOL
