How to Read Transplants Chart

  • The "Planting Dates" column, which provides dates safe from frost, is based on historical averages; it's not an annual forecast.
  • The "Moon Favorable" column gives the best planting dates based on the Moon's phases, based on an age-old practice that suggests that the Moon in its cycles affects plant growth.
  • Aboveground crops marked *
  • (E) means early planting; (L) means late

The heading on this list is "Best Planting Dates for Transplants" which indicates to me that you should have already started your seedlings and be ready to "transplant" their sproutlings by these dates . . I, personally, don't do many plants by seed. I buy the sproutlings which is why I looked up information on the best dates to "transplant." No silly questions here : ) Have a great day and Best of luck with your Garden!!

No silly questions here! This page is all about "transplants" (seeds that were already started by you or a nursery). If you are seeding, please see our Best Planting Dates for Seeds chart--which is customized to your zip code. You are right. The Best Dates

You are right. The Best Dates to Seed chart on our web site is customized down to zip code level and based on frost data by climate center. These transplant charts are regional--and based on 4 huge regions across North America (3 in the U.S.). Thus, sometimes there is some overlap. We'd advise that you go by the seed chart for zip code-level accuracy. We've thought about removing these transplant charts (which are from the printed book) to avoid confusion since the 2 charts are based on 2 different sources, but many of our readers still like to see this chart, especially for the Moon-favorable dates.

Please do not delete the transplant charts. My dad was an "ole school gardener" and taught me to use these years ago. He is gone now, but I still use these years, with good results.

Please keep these charts up.

Please keep these charts up. I, and I am sure many others, find them a valuable tool. I look at several sources and look for the common date when I can be so felxible. Thansk!

I know how the first

I know how the first commentor feels about silly questions. But have struggled for years through trial and error growing plants to plant later to my garden, I still don't know how far in advance to plant before putting in the ground! Can you give me clear guidance?

I don't think there are any

I don't think there are any silly questions when it relates to gardening...it is a forever learning experience...some of us learn differently and certainly at different times. The best way to educate self is through your local AG agent...but also remember too...seed should be started to line-up with your last frost dates...put them out too early and they will not survive...neither will they do good if left in the seedling pots too long. Know your area, then follow the timeline for that.

Good luck...read this site often-lots of good material to learn from.

Hi, Pat, Not sure where you

Hi, Pat, Not sure where you live, but it's (almost) never to late to plant something! For example in the Southeast, most regions can transplant tender vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers. You can also plant warm-season crops such as beans, squash, and corn. Don't forget about container gardening, too! See: http://www.almanac.com/topics/gardening/container-gardening

Ok I am confused, I just started my seeds indoor based on your seeding chart to do so and your transplant date is the same dates as starting the seeds indoor. If I started my seeds indoor last week, when are they suppose to be moved outside?

Moles are tearing my corn up.

Moles are tearing my corn up. How do I get rid of them?

Moles are looking for grubs

Moles are looking for grubs and worms. They don't eat plants. (Are sure it's moles? Could it be voles?) For moles, castor oil or castor beans down the hole work well. Or, a predator like a cat or dog. For voles, set some traps right next to the holes baited with peanut butter.

I want to move my avacado tree to a diffrent location. what is the best time. I live in location 1

I am not familiar with

I am not familiar with "location 1," but if that's Southern California or Hawaii, the avocado should be very happy. Prepare the soil to have a pH of 6.2 to 6.5 by adding lime if necessary. Plant the tree between March and June, before the heat of summer sets in, so that the roots can get comfortable in their new "home" and absorb water without difficulty. (They could have difficulty if the tree is planted in the heat of summer.) We hope this helps!
