How to Read Transplants Chart
- The "Planting Dates" column, which provides dates safe from frost, is based on historical averages; it's not an annual forecast.
- The "Moon Favorable" column gives the best planting dates based on the Moon's phases, based on an age-old practice that suggests that the Moon in its cycles affects plant growth.
- Aboveground crops marked *
- (E) means early planting; (L) means late

All the best dates for transplanting in the region 1 zone are in March and April, but what if I was getting a late start in doing this such as now which is the last part of may. Will I still be able to do my transplanting? What would be the worst that could happen if I started my garden in May? Later veggie ripening? They won't grow or produce? We are getting ready to have a full moon here, it's now at about 3/4 of the way there. My region is in Modesto, Ca.

i have a rose "tree", not a bush that is 23 years old. i am moving and would like to give it to a friend. what dates are best and any tips. i plan to use plenty of red clay and gravel and root stimulator. any idea how deep and wide i should try as to not damage roots? thx

Transplanting trees is best in the spring or in the fall. Transplant when the Moon is in a fertile sign (Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces). April 25-26, May 4-5, 13-15 are good dates. Get as much of the root ball as possible when you dig the rose tree and plant it in a hole that is one and half times wider than the roots. The planting depth should be such that the plant is exactly the same depth after transplanting as it was before. Add some compost to the hole before planting. Make sure to water every day during the first couple of weeks after transplanting.

Hi, Pam, This chart is about vegetables. We do not have a "best days" for transplanting trees--fall and spring are generally good seasons.

One question I have is the above chart lists moon favorable dates for peppers/tomatoes as 3/11 - 3/20. At this time the moon will be in New phase, but I was always taught that these should be planted in the 2nd Qtr. so wouldn't that put the dates 3/19 - 3/28 or so?

just to be clear I'm am talking about transplant dates

The Almanac recommends to plant vegetables that bear crops above ground in the light or waxing of the Moon, that is from the day the Moon is new to the day it's full. The next period would be 4/10 to 4/25.

These are all cool weather crops. You can plant greens as soon as the soil has warmed up a bit and is not too wet. See our best planting dates according to the Moon at almanac.com/content/best-planting-dates-transplants-region-1

Avacado tree
I want to move my avacado tree to a diffrent location. what is the best time. I live in location 1
By Almanac Staff
- reply
I am not familiar with "location 1," but if that's Southern California or Hawaii, the avocado should be very happy. Prepare the soil to have a pH of 6.2 to 6.5 by adding lime if necessary. Plant the tree between March and June, before the heat of summer sets in, so that the roots can get comfortable in their new "home" and absorb water without difficulty. (They could have difficulty if the tree is planted in the heat of summer.) We hope this helps!

Moles are tearing my corn up. How do I get rid of them?
By Almanac Staff
- reply
Moles are looking for grubs and worms. They don't eat plants. (Are sure it's moles? Could it be voles?) For moles, castor oil or castor beans down the hole work well. Or, a predator like a cat or dog. For voles, set some traps right next to the holes baited with peanut butter.

Ok I am confused, I just started my seeds indoor based on your seeding chart to do so and your transplant date is the same dates as starting the seeds indoor. If I started my seeds indoor last week, when are they suppose to be moved outside?
By Almanac Staff
- reply
The Best Dates to Seed chart on our web site is customized down to zip code level and based on frost data by climate center. These transplant charts are regional--and based on 4 huge regions across North America (3 in the U.S.). Thus, sometimes there is some overlap. We'd advise that you go by the seed chart for zip code-level accuracy. And look at the "seeds in the ground" column for when it's safe to put seeds (or transplants) outside. You'll just be ahead of the game if you have plants. You can also reference this page: http://www.almanac.com/content/vegetable-garden-planner

if you miss best dates to plant in garden due to weather, what is best practice?
By Almanac Staff
- reply
Hi, Pat, Not sure where you live, but it's (almost) never to late to plant something! For example in the Southeast, most regions can transplant tender vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers. You can also plant warm-season crops such as beans, squash, and corn. Don't forget about container gardening, too! See: http://www.almanac.com/topics/gardening/container-gardening
