I saw the PW a few days ago.

By John Shepherd

I saw the PW a few days ago. He flew from the ground into the split of an oak that split limbs about 18 feet up.
I first thought it was a hawk, but he turned out onto the side of tree for a side profile. His head feathers were all bristled out and it was an awesome sight for me to witness here in Lindale (east) Texas

Any tips on making them feel more at home?

By Almanac Staff

From what we've read, they are more comfortable and welcome if they have some big dead trees they can make a nesting place in. Another interesting bit of trivia is that Walter Lantz, the cartoonist who created Woody Woodpecker, apparently used the pileated woodpecker as his model for Woody. He’s got the fiery-red crest, and Woody’s signature is very similar to that of the P.W.

We live in northeastern Oklahoma and have lived in this area all our lives. My husband and I have been married 48yrs and we have always had a few Pileated around. They love dead trees and our pecan grove. When we walk through the woods to the river that runs along the back of our property and hear them cry out, it can seem a little eerie. LOL We love them!
