Traditionally, the January Moon is also known as the Old Moon.

To some Native American tribes, this was the Snow Moon, but most applied that name to the next Full Moon, in February.

January Full Moon

Why is it also called the "Old" Moon ?

An Old Moon usually refers to

An Old Moon usually refers to a waning crescent Moon. The Moon’s “age” each month never gets more than around 29.5 days old, but people often refer to it as “old” when it’s in the latter part of its phase.

Some Native American tribes called the January or February Moon the “Old Moon.”  By old, they are referencing that old fellow of winter.

Wolf moon aquarius

Im not sure if this is on topic but I'm an Aquarius and I honestly love the moon so much. I have a telescope and digital camera and I look at the moon as much as I can & take pictures of it. Wolves are honestly my favorite animal, and it was a coincidence that was what my moon is called. I'm very independent, aloof, and I love nature. Such as the woods or lakes etc.. it kind of makes sense to me of why it is called the wolf moon. Correct me if I'm wrong?

I forgot to mention. Every

I forgot to mention. Every full moon I go out late at night by myself on the side of my house and look at the moon & see it so captivating & feel a good sensation in my eyes and my heart.

Does the moon spin on an axis like earth does

I guess because my sign is cancer I've always had an interest in the moon and also beleive stages of the moon affects my mood.

Moon rotation

Yes, the Moon spins on its axis, completing one rotation about every 29.5 days, relative to Earth, which equals the time that it takes for it to complete one revolution (orbit) around Earth. This means that we always see essentially the same side of the Moon (except for a few factors, such as libration). The Moon used to rotate faster, but over billions of years, Earth’s gravity slowed it down so that it is now in synchronous rotation. This phenomenon is called tidal locking, and the process is not yet finished: Earth’s rotation is also slowing. If the aging Sun doesn’t interfere, Earth will eventually be tidally locked with the Moon: One side of Earth will always face the same side of the Moon.

Hello friend I seen something

Hello friend I seen something called a white smokey substance around the full moon what its called it seems amazing and I love to see more and more today I'm going to watch that but I can't see why ? Can you answer me what it is ?

A bright Moon covered by a

A bright Moon covered by a thin layer of high clouds can sometimes make the Moon appear wispy. The light from the Moon (actually, from the Sun that bounces to the Moon, then bounces to Earth) will reflect and refract through ice crystals in the clouds. Sometimes, this will just cause a filmy glow around the Moon; at other times, you might see a rainbow prism on the clouds or an actual lunar halo (circle of light) around the Moon. In rare cases, you might see two faded small white moons to either side of the Moon, as part of a lunar halo: these are called moon dogs (or mock moons or paraselenae), also caused by light passing through ice crystals in the atmosphere.

Is there really any

Is there really any correlation with a female's monthly cycle and moon phases and/or the tides in the ocean? It seems mine IS, LIKE CLOCKWORK!

In many cultures, the Moon

In many cultures, the Moon has been a symbol of fertility. Scientific studies have been conducted to try to determine whether there is indeed a link between the lunar cycle and women's monthly cycles. A few studies have found it likely (at least in some aspect), while many others have found no correlation. You can find reports of some studies online--search site:.edu or site:.gov.
On one side of the argument, the lunar cycle is 29.5 days. The average length of a women's monthly cycle is 28 days; some individuals average longer or shorter than 28 days, so depending on one's biological clock, she may or may not be in sync with the lunar cycle. An individual's length of a cycle can also change each month depending on health, age, and other factors. Some also argue that if the Moon influenced human menstrual cycles, then it should influence the cycles of other mammals as well; so that all species would have the same length--about 29.5 days. But the average number of days in a cycle varies quite a bit between species.
On the other hand, many women find that their cycles are in sync with the lunar cycle and firmly believe that the Moon has a definite influence. They are backed by hundreds of years of cultural history.

Surely if the lunar cycle

Surely if the lunar cycle controlled the female menstrual cycle, all women would ovulate simultaneously and all women would have their period at the same time.

I noticed that the moon does

I noticed that the moon does affect my cycle, but when I am around other females that affects it too. I am always alone now so the moon has greater pull now.

I always heard that, playing

If you want your hair to grow

If you want your hair to grow faster, should you cut it on a new moon or a full moon?

To enhance hair growth, cut

To enhance hair growth, cut you hair on the new moon, this way, your hair grows better as the "moon grows"

A bit more detail...I

A bit more detail...I understand if you want your hair to grow, you cut it CLOSEST to the time of a full moon (but not past the minute). Same as stunting the growth - closest to the new moon (but not past - OR your in the next cycle).

I say on the full moon. I

I say on the full moon.
I trim my hair always on the full moon.I had short hair. So i started cutting it on the full moon each month.I only have 1/4 inch trimmed off. now my hair is about 5 inches away from my waist.I have been doing this for about 2 years now.True story.

For a few days, including Jan

For a few days, including Jan 17 and 18, a friend and I saw what looked liked a smaller-than-usual white crescent shape at the BASE of the invisible moon, like the shape of a bowl from the side. Can you help? Thanks

Within a day or so before or

Within a day or so before or after the new Moon, you will see a very thin crescent of light, in the shape of a curve (like a very thin Cheshire cat smile). The curve, depending on the season, time of day, and viewer location, may be oriented so that it is like a smile, rather than having it upright like a parentheses sign.

A crescent moon is always low in the sky and appears around dawn or dusk. From January to March in the United States and other northern temperate latitudes (from 25 to 50 degrees north latitude), the crescent Moon will have its points, or horns, aimed upward, so that the Moon looks like a smile.

On the other hand, January 18, 2013, was the time of the first quarter Moon, quite a bit past new Moon. If you are saying that a thin crescent appeared below the unlit side of the Moon (on the left side), in addition to the lit right side of the Moon, then we're stumped, especially without seeing an actual image. No optical effect or phenomenon (such as Moon dogs, halos, pillars, earthshine, etc.) comes to mind that might be the cause.

Were you using an optical aid, such as a telescope or binoculars? If so, it might be something to do with the lenses and atmosphere. It probably wasn't Uranus, which you could see with binoculars around mid-January close to the Moon.

Anybody else have an idea?

Why do I retain more fluid

Why do I retain more fluid during a full moon? It happens every month!

There is an ongoing debate

There is an ongoing debate among experts as to whether the lunar phases significantly influence our health and behavior. There are various theories as to why the Moon might influence us, including gravitational pull and vibration. Many scientific studies seem to indicate that there is no correlation between the Moon and health, or they offer results that conflict with other studies. In general, there seems to be no conclusive evidence.

If you are interested, however, you can find some of these studies online or in scientific journals. For example, the following article touches upon a related subject, urinary retention, and seems to suggest that there is a correlation with the new Moon, but not the full Moon.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pm...

For more information, you might try asking a reference librarian at your local public library or nearest university.

Water retention in general can occur for several reasons, including salt intake, reaction to medication, weather, certain medical conditions, certain allergies, etc.

Hope this helps!

Make sure someone else sees that halo. I commented to my neighbor, "Look at that halo around the moon!" She said "What halo?" Turns out I had developed unusually rapid cataracts.

I have noticed that sometimes

I have noticed that sometimes the moon seems to glow a yellow around the edges. What causes this?

The Moon can appear silvery

The Moon can appear silvery white when it's high in the sky or yellowish or even orange when it's near the horizon. The reason for this is due to the Earth's atmosphere. When the Moon (or Sun) is near the horizon,
the light has to pass through a very wide path through an atmosphere filled with dust particles and the light scatters sideways.
