Tulips and other plants

What can we plant next to tulips in Zone 5. We are wanting to create a bulb bed with pupils but they last such a short time we want to have something in place to look good the rest of the year

Tulip companions

For your zone 5, some readers have suggested johnny-jump ups (violas) and old fashioned Wallflowers (plant in late summer). Blue irises are also so pretty, however, they overlap with tulips.

I have been told that if you dead an Iris it may grow again?

Growing squash from saved acron squash

I dried the seeds & planted them. They made beautiful plants & produced blossoms but no fruit. Am I doing something wrong or can't you get fruit from boughten fruit?

squash not fruiting

If you have squash blossoms without fruit, this  is usually a pollination issue. The bees need to pollinate between the male and female blossoms and sometimes lack of bees or poor weather can be an issue. You can alway pollinate by hand in the morning with q-tip. See our squash page for more information: https://www.almanac.com/plant/squash-and-zucchini

Tomatoes are sensitive about the air temperatures. If the night temps fall below 55 or rise above 75 or if the day temps are above 90F the pollen becomes sticky and pollination can not occur. If the flowers are not pollinated, the bloom dies and falls off.

When to clear last years dead garden plants in February?

Garden Planner help

Hi Peter. If you drag a plant into a row or block using the plant's corner 'handles' you should only see one plant label for that row/block. If you wish to turn off plant labels just double-click on the plant in your plan, then deselect the Plant Label checkbox.

To turn off all plant labels for new plants please click on the Settings button in your plan's toolbar (the cog icon), then deselect the 'Show plant labels for new plants' box, and click OK.

If you have any further questions please email the Garden Planner team directly using the Contact Us button on the Garden Planner start page. Thanks!

I just bought a house a few years ago and as much as I like the idea behind a beautiful yard like my neighbor's, I like the idea of edible, function-able, and sustainable space more. I have been using the planner

I have been using the planner for the past year and was pleased that it helped me space the plants correctly and save me money by not buying to many plants or sowing seeds I didn't need. The money I saved more than paid for the app.
I love the way you can expand your garden and plan months ahead. Would like to see more information on the watering requirements of various plants.

I have been considering this

I have been considering this app for some time but just can't seem to justify the cost with my small garden. I do have room to expand. I would love to use this app for a full year so I could decide if it's worth the cost to me. I also do hydroponic gardening and would love some ideas for the denser growing media in that application.

I would love to win this

I tried the Garden Planner

I tried the Garden Planner last year and found it to be a great help. I only did a trial subscription because I couldn't afford it at the time and loved what I tried. Were I not on a fixed income, I would subscribe in a heartbeat. The information was great and it was so easy to use. I expanded my "little" veggie garden to a 50' x 4' bed and now worry what will be the best time to plant due to the crazy weather we have been having.

Raemur, We're happy to hear

Raemur, We're happy to hear the trial to the Garden Planner helped. It sounds as if you could indeed use the Garden Planner subscription with a 50x 4 veggie bed. I think it would help you with best times to plant. Could you email us at: AlmanacEditors@yankeepub.com  Thanks, your OFA editors

A 25 acre coffee farm - that sounds exciting!
The Garden Planner is really aimed at the home gardener, although we do have some customers with small farms who use it and love it. The software doesn’t currently include icons for coffee, but you can edit the name, spacing, and sowing/planting/harvesting times of any existing plant icon to represent an unlisted plant.
You can create up to 5 plans per year in the Garden Planner, and each plan can be up to 1000’ in either direction. The best way to find out if the Garden Planner will meet your needs is to take out a free trial by going to http://gardenplanner.almanac.com/, clicking on Start Garden Planner in the top right corner and then, when the Garden Planner has launched, click on Create An Account (no payment details are taken so a subscription does not automatically start).
