Sun Photo Contest

Your rating: None Average: 4.3 of 5 (21 votes)

Enter our annual Sun Photo Contest. You can submit photos any time of the year. We award prizes at the end of every SUMMER!

(Select the "Sun Photo Contest" category.)

Your photo can capture the beautiful colors of sunset, the start of a glorious day, or anything that says Sun to you.

After all, The Old Farmer's Almanac covers "Everything under the Sun, including the Moon!" The judging criteria: beauty, creativity, and originality (not expertise in photography). Amateurs, only!

For examples and inspiration, see all of the submitted photos in the Almanac's Sun Photo Contest Ecard Gallery.

A copy of The Old Farmer's Almanac and also this Suncatcher with the Sun logo. (See more suncatcher pictures in our General Store.)

What the heck, is no one

What the heck, is no one reading the terms of this contest. You are giving away your images to Yankee Publishing, Inc. The terms read all images become properety of Yankee Publishing which they can do what they want with... make money off of you for free for a chance to win a cheap book and little glass suncatcher. Give you the rights to my photographs...I don't think so Yankee Publishing:.. NO! Let's see if you leave my comment up or remove it!

Sir, Thanks for writing. We

By Almanac Staff on August 12

Sir, Thanks for writing. We do have the right to remove comments on our own site, especially taunting comments that make us or, especially, our readers uncomfortable. However, this may be a good opportunity to address our  loyal Almanac readers . . .

Rest assured that this is not our intention at all. The contests are just meant to be fun as our Almanac community has long enjoyed this free photo-sharing feature. Given our "old" age, we have a massive photo archive of our own--plus, content going back hundreds of years, so we are quite content-rich and do not rely on third-party content such as these photos.

Further, these contests are meant for amateurs, not professionals. If we ever did see a photo that we thought might fit a publication, we would certainly ask our reader and provide equitable compensation. We have to create legal terms because the photos may be shared across the web and it's largely out of your control (and ours), but we will never use your photos for any professional purposes without request. To our knowledge, this has never happened. We just don't tend to work this way.

In terms of photos, you can use our photo gallery for free, not just to enter a contest. We used to offer email sharing but this has proven too cumbersome. However, you can share your photos via social media. We also share some of the great photos by our readers online and credit them.

We have an editorial staff of five and this is a smal business so it's not a huge prize; we give away the annual book that we publish ourselves.  We happen to value it. -We hope you do, too! -Your OFA editors

By fortunato_uno

Other then the one time use of the image. Will you be planning on being allowed to use an image anytime after this one contest? I ask because I believe in intilectual property rights. Also, if I have my mark in the bottom corner, will it remain there?

By Almanac Staff

Hi, David, The photos will look exactly as they were submitted. There's no change in orientation on the server side. This means that if a photo uploaded appears portrait when it should be landscape, or vice- versa, it's because the original photo ''as uploaded by the user'' was the wrong orientation. We are unable to flip them once they're loaded; however, this won't affect how we judge the contests!
