According to folklore, sunshine on Candlemass Day means a return of wintry weather. A bear was the forecaster in France and England, and Germany had it's badgers. German immigrants to Pennsylvania in the 1800s brought the legend to America. Finding no badgers but lots of groundhogs, they adopted the New World species to fit the lore.
