Lady Mud Ankle

To celebrate our 225th anniversary, we’re looking through our archives to bring you 225 pieces of wit, wisdom, and fun in a series we’re calling Almanac Treasures (see more of them here).

When crossing the pavement, a lady should raise her dress with the right hand, a little above the ankle. To raise the dress with both hands is vulgar and can only be excused when the mud is very deep.
