Potato Splinter Trick

To celebrate our 225th anniversary, we’re looking through our archives to bring you 225 pieces of wit, wisdom, and fun in a series we’re calling Almanac Treasures (see more of them here).

To remove a splinter, peel, wash and grate a thumb- sized piece of white or red potato. Place the potato gratings into a piece of gauze bandage. Wrap the gauze so the potato bits won’t fall out, and tape it to the area over the splinter. Leave it on for at least a few hours, or overnight if possible, so the potato has a chance to dry out. Grated carrot can be mixed with the potato if desired.
