An empty chair at the table?

When we lay up the table for Christmas dinner we always lay an extra place setting with a chair. Then when the dinner is finished2 toasts are given. One to our Dear Lord,' happy Birthday' and the second to 'Absent friends' That is always made to the extra seat. Then we start remembering those folk and laughing over little things they did. Sometimes we have folk who have never been to this dinner before and initially find it a bit odd but afterwards after they have remembered also they always say how warm the feeling was and they would never forget the experience.
Does anyone else do a similar thing?

WOW! That is SO AWESOME! I've not ever heard of that before, but, I do hope that next year for both Thanksgiving and Christmas this old mind will remember to do it!!!! How wonderful!!
