Hello. I am a musician, a single mother with one son in college and very interested in astronomy. I am also happy to have found this forum as well as site, have been reading the Almanac for years and years.
Here is my question: This New Years Eve the moon will be full and a so called "blue moon". When was the last time this happened?
The last time was 1990. Before that was 1971 :)
Here is a site to calculate Blue Moons.

Welcome Wolfsong, and that's a good bit of info there ... hope it doesn't foretell even more craziness on New Year's than there normally is!
Enjoy the website!! There are many more articles than they used to have.
There is a large number of CHEAP books on Astronomy at www.amazon.com... I just purchased a 10 inch telescope to go with a go-to scope I already had and a few Astronomy books. Never to old or young to learn about our Universe.
Astrology is one of the best subjects I could ever had. I do like the idea that we can fly into space yet it was disappointing to know that we have not gotten the technology to see through the clouds. NASA cancelled this morning's space shuttle landing and rescheduled it for tomorrow! They had to cancel the Discovery Space Shuttle from landing since the clouds were too thick and low to clearly land.Let's hope that on Tuesday there is no naturally occurring event that prevents NASA from landing the space shuttle. At least this time they created a backup landing spot in California so if Florida is too cloudy they have someplace else to land.

I am joining the forum to share insights and info about star gazing. Live in the country of Kentucky and spend every possible moment I can outside, especially at night. Also have gatherings and campfires for full moon celebrations.
My Family & friends willl be spreading my brothers ashes on the Great South Bay in Bellport,L.I., NY on Oct. 23. I'm wondering if their will be a Big Harvest moon on that day and at what time will it be at its best.
Hi, Aline.
The Full Moon is actually on Friday October 22 and it is the Harvest moon. I'm not sure of when exactly it will be full, but it will still be plenty fully and bright on Saturday the 23rd too.
