New pond!

My new pond is doing nicely, it's not very big, but I can get as many water-pots full of water out of it as I want, I may be able to get a used gas water pump cheap, but eventually I want to put in a small water-pumping windmill. I may have an old tank in town that holds maybe 300-400 gallons to use as a reservoir, just attach a spigot, place on hill, and let water pressure feed hose! I'm going to take picture and get them on here soon!

Excellent!

Larry, you've got so much done this year that it puts me to shame. Will you be using straw bales to keep it clean?

My folks' pond had fish that all disappeared ... probably raccoon, but in Pennsy we saw mink when we fished streams (and not out-of-the-way places either), so the raccoons better watch out.

Will love to see pics!

Hi!

No, there aren't any fish in the pond, the deepest spot in the pond is only about two feet deep and would freeze solid in the winter here. (Any one know if there is any truth to what I've heard about Goldfish being able to be left in ponds that freeze solid in the winter?) So far I plan on hand cleaning the pond, as it isn't very big. I put some of my nitrogen fixing microalgae directly in the pond, so what ever I water from it will have a green manure crop of the algae!:D I found an old hand operated water pump in my dad's old shop, I sprayed it down with WD-40 and plan on letting it soak enough to take apart and clean it to get it working again,,,,it has a garden hose faucet on it!:),,,The adapter on the pump looks as if it is made to put in a water barrel to pump out of, so it may even be a siphon pump,,,,just have to wait and see!,,,I took a few pictures,,,,just need to get a chance to get them loaded!

Re: "Greenies"

I miss them too,,,,

I wasn't able to get my hand pump I found apart yet,,,,need to find my pipe wrenches.

I did talk to my friend who got the gravel from me the other day, he is thinking about my offer to trade the gravel for the water pump he has, he thinks it needs a new engine, but when working it pumps lots of water.

Possible pod expansion,,,,already!:D)

I may be able to sell more gravel to expand the pond,,,,maybe even a bunch of gravel!:D)

The pond is still rising about an inch over night,,,,the trees use too much water during the day for it too rise any then, but the higher the water in the pond rises, the more water there is for the near by trees I'm sure!:D)

Go Larry!

You're a very good barterer.

Keep us up-to-date!

Oh yeh, almost forgot, what are your pets doing with this pond? Gotta be a new toy for them.

Pets & Pond!

My dogs love the pond, even Pugsley,,,,he also hasn't been as afraid of getting out into the edge of the river since the pond got formed! The cats I'm not sure of, I haven't seen any of them down there yet. The wild birds love it!

I took my hand pump to my Uncles garage this morning and he put it in his vise and used his pipe wrench to get it apart while I tested out my bike after fixing the flat tire I got yesterday. I was glad the pump wasn't as rusted inside as I expected, and that the new tire I put on the bike while replacing the old tube made the bike much easier to pedal,,,,even though the new tire has a tread design made much more for loose grave etc., it still did better on the pavement too!,,,Probably because it has thicker sidewalls. It would be better if I could find a tire like it for the front too, as some times the back end wants to try to go faster than the front in the gravel.

Cool weather and wind affecting pond,,,

Cool weather has gotten the level in the pond increasing faster again, but yesterday we had hard wind and the trees pulled most of the new level back out, it's back up where it was yesterday morning though! Not many bugs have been in the water yesterday or today, must be the cool weather.

Also,

The pond got put in right where lots of the surviving grasshoppers were hanging out, so hopefully the dig killed the eggs they were laying,,,if not the people who got the gravel have chickens, so they will have free feed!:D)
