Any ideas for a safe way to get rid of weeds in my driveway? I have pets and I don't want to use chemicals.
they make extra strong stuff for herbicide, but I've had some luck using just plain old apple-cider vinegar from the grocery store.
None of your pets will go near that drive with vinigar. It is a true well tested way to keep cats off your garden. If your drive is gravel then jsu hoe it, works on mine alright. But then it is only 8 ft wide and about 50 ft long.
Cover your drive with plastic sheeting and let the sun kill them down to their roots. It dosen't take long for this to happen. Or you could just cover the area with weeds and not the whole driveway.
I also use vinegar. It works as soon as the sun hits it. It also works on slugs too. You can by a gallon jug of vinegar for a fraction of the price of herbacides and it is completely safe.
Heard about using water to kill weeds from our local Cooperative Extension master gardener - just use the teapot and pour away - it works and no chemicals.
Pouring boiling water on the weeds will kill them. Dig them after they are wilted. If they come back, hit them again.
If it is a graveled drive, add rock salt to the boiling water treatment. I would think twice about using the salt if I had plants beside the driveway. Rain could wash it into your beds where your beautiful flowers used to reside.
Vinegar, too, will kill the weeds. I would consider the proximity of neighbors before using this method. It has an unpleasant odor to some people and the neighborhood children would be calling you "Pickle Man".
in a sprayer mix 4 cups bleach one cup gas and spray the driveway, as soon as it is dry it is safe for your pets. I do this every year, and my four dogs and one cat never been harmed.
