THERE'S ANOTHER rhubarb worth knowing if you're seeking an unusual, showy landscape plant. Ornamental rhubarb, which isn't edible, is being used as a colorful accent in gardens from coast to coast, a favorite of garden designers who enjoy working with big, bold plants. Useful at the back of a large border or as a strong accent, these rhubarbs are prized for their wild, lush foliage and their family trait of bearing leaves near the ground, hiding exposed soil. Usually one is enough to make a strong statement. Rheum 'Ace of Hearts' produces five-foot stems and glossy-green leaves with a purplish blush on the underside and large, spidery white or pale-pink flowers. The stunning R. palmatum 'Atrosanguineum' sends out jagged foliage on red stems and reaches at least six feet in height.
