Alabama Gardener and writer Barbara Pleasant sprays "a cocktail of fish emulsion, insecticidal soap, and Thai chili paste with garlic [the kind you get in Asian markets] to get rid of aphids on leafy plants." The soap is what actually repels the aphids, the fish emulsion gives the plants a boost if they need it after being stressed by the insects, and the chili paste drives off the family dogs that can damage plants when they are attracted by the fish emulsion.
Grow vegetables that ripen in a frost and can be harvested in snow.
