What should I do now to prepare my roses for winter?
You have some time yet, and there is some debate about this process, but we suggest that after the first hard frost, you cut back any rose plants to about 24 inches. The smaller size will prevent them from being battered by wind and ice. Tying the canes together with twine also will protect them from the elements. Mound fresh, loose soil or compost perhaps 8 to 12 inches around the base of each plant. You can also add hay or straw. Remove all this material in the spring, when you see new growth emerge.
