Gardening Questions and Answers

A new gardening question of the day appears every day of the year on the front page of Almanac.com. Below is the answer to one of the questions from our Gardening Questions and Answers Archive where you can find over 400 more gardening questions (with answers!).

Question:

When should I plant strawberries in a strawberry jar? What variety of strawberries do you recommend for planting in such a jar?

Answer:

The alpine strawberry, or wild strawberry, is a good choice for containers. But any small ever-bearing strawberry variety will do (you don't want the berries to get too big or heavy). When planting, start with small young plants. They are easier to fit into the plant pockets, and their root systems will quickly spread inside the container. Use a well-drained potting soil for the planting medium. Plant the strawberries outside after any danger of frost has passed. You also can start the plants indoors earlier if you like.
