A new gardening question of the day appears every day of the year on the front page of Almanac.com. Below is the answer to one of the questions from our Gardening Questions and Answers Archive where you can find over 400 more gardening questions (with answers!).

Question:

When should I prune my lilacs?

Answer:

Lilacs and other spring-flowering shrubs should be pruned just after they bloom, to avoid cutting off buds from the previous season. Prune with the idea of providing them with good light and air circulation, and it wouldn't hurt to fertilize them immediately after pruning, using a slow-release fertilizer and plenty of water.
