Gardening Questions and Answers

A new gardening question of the day appears every day of the year on the front page of Almanac.com. Below is the answer to one of the questions from our Gardening Questions and Answers Archive where you can find over 400 more gardening questions (with answers!).

Question:

Will the salt that I use to melt ice on my driveway harm the plants in the adjacent flower beds?

Answer:

That depends on how liberally you apply the salt and how you spread it. If the salt penetrates below the plants' root zone, it's essential to keep the soil moist. If at all possible, continue to water the bed during the winter. The best advice is to protect your flower beds with a thick layer of mulch, which will prevent salt contamination.
