Gardening Questions and Answers

A new gardening question of the day appears every day of the year on the front page of Almanac.com. Below is the answer to one of the questions from our Gardening Questions and Answers Archive where you can find over 400 more gardening questions (with answers!).

Question:

Every year, my zucchini plants are killed by squash borers. Is there any way to prevent this?

Answer:

Try mulching with aluminum foil. It confuses the moths so that they can't lay their eggs at the base of the stalk. Examine the vines occasionally for borers; if you find any, remove them by slitting the stalk. You also can spray or dust the plant stems weekly with malathion or methoxychlor.
