MORE AND MORE wind socks are flying from porches and flagpoles to proclaim festive occasions or holidays. Make your own to herald a special event or to showcase a design. You'll need 4 feet of nylon cord, 1/2 yard of lightweight fabric (cotton, or nylon taffeta for a weather-resistant sock), fabric paint or additional colored fabric for decorating, 3/4 yard of narrow nylon boning, a darning needle, and 20 feet of 3-3/4-inch-wide ribbon in one or more colors. Cut a piece of fabric 16x24 inches. Turn the long edges under 11/2 inches; press and stitch. Insert nylon boning into top casing. Trim 1 inch off the boning to allow for side seam. Add your design or message to the rectangle. With right sides together, stitch side seam. Turn sock right side out. Cut nylon cord into three equal pieces and use darning needle to insert each piece of cord through the top edge just under the boning. Space cords evenly, and secure each with a knot. Tie the top ends of the cords together for hanging. Cut ribbon(s) into 8 equal-length streamers, and stitch to bottom of sock.
