You can not usually see aYou can not usually see a "new Moon" because this is when the illuminated side of the Moon is pointed away from Earth. How soon you can see the "new" Moon depends on the Moon's orbit. (March is a good month.) If you have very clear viewing, you may be able to see the crescent Moon when it is 6% illuminated (about the third day) but judge for yourself!
