When temperatures are aboveWhen temperatures are above 90 degrees F, tomatoes may crack. This can also occur when rain follows a dry period and there is inconsistent moisture. It's important that tomatoes get even watering on a consistent schedule, and that you water in the mornings. Try to cool the crops by planting with 2 to 4 inches of mulch--and also cool the soil with overhead irrigation. Also give your tomatoes some relief with afternoon shade; consider a shade cloth that lets in some light.
