Take me into a candy shop any day, anywhere, and I will walk out with a turtle every time. No matter how good the selection, to me, nothing beats the combination of chocolate, caramel and pecans.
I never thought I would be able to make these delectable treats at home. Turns out, I still can’t…but, I can make a version of them which is easy, delicious, and just as satisfying. Poor Man’s Turtles!
I got this recipe from a friend. It is one of those recipes that you don’t even need to write down—it’s that easy. It makes you say, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
Here is what you need:
- Small, bite-sized pretzels
- Chocolate covered caramels (I used ROLOS® candies)
- Pecan halves
Preheat the oven to 275ºF. Spray a cookie sheet with non-stick spray. Place pretzels on tray in a single layer, salted side up, spacing at least an inch apart. Unwrap candies and place one on top of each pretzel. Bake for 3 minutes.
Remove from the oven and gently press a pecan half into each softened candy. Let harden (I popped mine in the fridge for about 10 minutes to speed up this step).

You can make as many or as few as you wish—but I do have to warn you, they won’t last long! Even a co-worker who doesn’t like pretzels asked me for the recipe. They are that good.
