Exercise and staying active are very important for your overall health. However, when you have a job that requires you to sit at a desk for hours on end, it may deter your best intentions. Here are some simple ways to keep your metabolism in check while at work, courtesy of The 2014 Old Farmer’s Almanac  (now available everywhere!).
Alternatives to Exercise
Experts say that people who simply stand for 2 minutes for every 20 of sitting can reap significant rewards, such as reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Prolonged sitting slows metabolism, causing an accumulation of fat in livers, hearts, and brains. One approach: Stand every time you answer the phone or when you eat lunch. An increasing number of workers are using stand-up desks, adjustable desks that allow both standing and sitting, and even desks with built-in treadmills.
Many office chairs have evolved into “workout” chairs that offer a variety of workout options, such as resistance pulleys. For another spin on this theme, “Hawaii” or “hula” chairs come equipped with a gyrating chair.
Turn phone calls into workout sessions by standing, squatting, or lifting weights while you talk. One Japanese inventor designed a “dumbbell phone,” consisting of a weight that attaches to a landline.
