This recipe comes from Mrs. Marshall's great grandmother, Harriet Bradstreet, a descendant of Massachusetts Governor Simon Bradstreet.

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup seedless raisins
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup nut meats

Cream the shortening and the sugar, add the egg and the raisins. Mix and sift the remaining dry ingredients and add alternately with the sour cream to the raisin mixture. Then add the nuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets and bake for 12 to 15 minutes in a 400 degree F oven. Cookies always come out plump and golden regardless of the type of stove used.
