I have made this for my neighbors and friends every Christmas morning for the last 30 years. It's easy (I usually have about 30 to 45 people) and most of the work is done the night before.

Yield: 8 servings

  • 1 loaf challah bread cut in 8 slices (I don't use the ends).
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Beat eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, salt and orange juice. Lay bread in flat pan, pour mixture over bread turning slices to coat evenly and refrigerate, covered, overnight. Saute in buttered hot skillet in morning. (You can sprinkle with cinnamon if you want before you saute)
