This recipe was given to my grandmother in the early 1950's by her best friend Nellie Anderson. The recipe was written on a scratch piece of paper. I found it in her book of handwritten recipes. I remember my mother would make these cookies when we were kids and they were quite a treat after school. They have always been one of my favorites.
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup white sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup raisins (optional)
- 2 cups drained fruit cocktail
- 1-1/2 cups nuts
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 4 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon cloves
Preheat oven to 400°. In a large bowl, cream together shortening, sugars and eggs. In a separate bowl mix dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture. Stir in drained fruit cocktail and nuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls on cookie sheet. Bake at 400° for approximately 12 to 15 minutes.
