The ingredients are simple, the directions are easy, and the bread tastes as good as it looks. Has the slightly sweet molasses flavor and chewy consistency of brown bread. --Philbrook Farm Inn, Shelburne, New Hampshire

Yield: Makes 1 loaf

  • 1-1/2 cups graham flour
  • 2 cups white flour
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark molasses
  • 2 cups sour milk or buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

In a bowl combine all ingredients, mixing well. Pour into greased 9x5-inch loaf pan and bake 1 hour (or until tests done) at 350 degrees F.
