Ingredients

1/2 pound butter, margarine, or shortening (melted and cooled to lukewarm)
2-1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon cloves (you can substitute nutmeg or ginger, but cloves gives this cookie its distinctive flavor)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 beaten egg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
1/4 cup molasses
4 cups flour

Instructions

Grease baking sheets. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl combine first 6 ingredients and mix well. Dissolve baking soda in ¼ cup warm water and add to large bowl. Beat in molasses. Stir in flour. Drop dough in walnut-size lumps on a greased cookie sheet. Cook 7-10 minutes (I cook 8 minutes). Cookie is barely done in middle and crisp around edges when done.
