Flavorful and aromatic, this attractive bread resembles pound cake. It's an excellent accompaniment to any meal. -- Birchwood Inn, Temple, New Hampshire

Yield: Makes 2 loaves.

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2-1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1-1/2 cups milk
  • 1-1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons almond extract

In a large bowl, sift the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder together. In a separate bowl, combine the eggs, milk, oil, poppy seeds, and vanilla and almond extracts, and add to the flour mixture, beating well.

Pour into two greased 9x5-inch loaf pans and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 1 hour.
