Russian Cabbage Soup

Steaming hot mugs of this mixture will take the chill off the coldest winter’s day. –Shoreham Inn, Shoreham, Vermont


1 can (48 ounces) V8 juice
48 ounces water
1 medium-sized onion, chopped
1 medium-sized head cabbage, cut into small nieces
8 ounces brown sugar
1 cup raisins
Granulated garlic and pepper to taste


Combine all ingredients in soup kettle and simmer over low heat until cabbage is soft–about 1-½ hours.
