I live in New York State and I know it's fall when I wake up in the morning and it's still dark out, and the morning air is crisp and cool. Also, I know it's fall when the leaves start changing color, and when my garden is full of old, dead vegetable plants from the recent summer.

I live in the Northwest and when I see the blue aphid flying around my backyard, I know the leaves will be changing in a few days and autumn is here.
