2008 Ice Storm Photos
On December 11-12, 2008, a severe ice storm hit New England, cutting off power to more than a million people across New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, and New York. Here are photos showing the beauty and the devastation.

The photos remind me of a time in the 1970s in Atlanta, Georgia when we had an ice storm in March. We didn't have power for a week (although our neighbors did) because ours was an (no pun intended here) isolated case--wires were pulled from the house. Also, the temperature didn't rise much that week.

this reminds me of 2004 here in hood river oregon where we had nothing but ice and snow there were no power outages thank god but there was a white out that lasted for part of the winter and was not fun if you got major joint problems and we may get that againthis year if weather does what i think it is going to do

This reminds me of "ICE STORM 1994" we had in Collierville, Tennessee. It occured Feb. 11th, my mothers birthday.I remember laughing when she stated,"I will not stick my toe out in this mess." (She,needless to say, did not like snow.) We were without electricity for several days.

So much beauty so much damage I have been concerned about the New England States Thank you for the photos so we could see for ourselves Several from our church went with a power company, from Pennsylvania, up there to help out. They were told not to expect to be home for Christmas We hope all electricity is soon restored I know the country folk know how to deal with these problems but the city one I am sure don't have wood fires to keep them warm and to cook on. Just think Mother Nature provided a start on next years wood pile supply. It will have plenty of time to dry out Will keep you all in prayer and thank you for all the pictures especially the web cam which I check every day Hope it is soon back up and working. Keep warm the best you can and Merry Christmas.

I was awed by the pictures from the hugh ice storm. Here in Newfoundland we were spared that devastation. With temperatures higher than normal we had rain and lots of it. Since the winds are predominately from the west we were expecting some of your misery, Peace be with you all.

I've never seen an ice storm since I live in this Sunshine State. It's very pretty, yet it gave much damage. From that, anything can be destructive.

We, here in central Missouri, experienced a devastating ice storm in December of 2006. While one can find haunting beauty in some of the fantastic scenery, there is a heavy element of sadness at some of the destruction. Some of our most majestic trees were destroyed, some completely and others just dishearteningly disfigured. Now two years later, reminders have appeared as the trees have shed their leaves and I, for one, do not wish to experience that kind of storm again even though I understand it is a part of nature... the good with the bad, survival of the fittest, etc.

WE HAVE HAD 3 STORMS IN OUR MARRIED LIFE 67, 78, 90 THAT REALLY WERE BAD. WE WERE WITH OUT POWER IN 67 FOR 11 DAYS, WITH 2 BABIES IN DIAPERS, AND 20 COWS TO MILK, IN 78 WE LOST POWER FOR 8 DAYS , NO BABABIES, AND WE HAD A GENERATOR, IN 1990, IT WAS 5 DAYS , BEEF COWS WITH CALVES AND WE HAD A GENERATOR. IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF STORMS, AND AFTERMATH, BUT ALSO THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE. WE LIVE IN WESTERN INDIANA

I lived in Upstate NY for most of my life and I survived many ice and snow storms. A few years ago I retired and moved to the central coast of California to be closer to family AND because I was so tired of shoveling snow. The ice storm is beautiful, just takes my breath away. At the same time it's so devastating. I do get homesick for friends back East, but seeing these pictures reminds me why I moved.

It's amazing the destructive power of the water and cold together but yet can create some fantastic images for viewing. As I look out onto a golf course in southern california now I realize why my mother moved from Michigan, but she always spoke fondly of her childhood in the snow.

In mid March of 1993 I was 7 months pregnant with my now 15 year old daughter when we got a huge surprise. In mid to NW Alabama we got ice and snow. It was beautiful. The roads were of course covered with ice great for sledding which we do not get to do much here in the south. We have video of all of us having a great time, entitled 'Winter Storm 93'. It was so much fun and it stayed on the ground and roads for a week.

I am 62 and have lived in Williamsburg, Virginia most of my life. Have been there and done that with ice stormes. They are pretty afterwards. Breaking trees and tree branches and the sounds of it all night around your house is not worth the pictures. Let's just pray for snow.

This same storm system hit us on December 10th and we actually got snow! That might not seem like a big deal but I live about 30 miles from Galveston, TX. It's a rare occurrence for us! It started snowing around 6:30 pm and was still snowing at 11:00 pm. Of course it was all but gone in the morning. A nice and welcome surprise! It even snowed in Galveston that night. Everyone in our neighborhood was out taking pictures and my son even made a one foot tall snowman!

Of all things, snow is rare in my neighborhood of Eclectic, Al., so several inches in March of 1993 almost put us out of commission! We call it our 'blizzard year'. My co-worker from the capitol city could not get to work from 30 miles away and I had to put our newspaper together by myself. Pictures? I took some for the paper of my grandson in the snow and several other things and borrowed some from friends. It was a pretty good newspaper that week! Snow and all.

Just stumbled upon this article, so this comment is a little late... although, this week , it's supposed to wind up cold enough to freeze the pontoons off Jimmy Buffet's flying boat here in Sunny-yet-chilly FL. I was just musing that maybe the Winter Warlock got a little testy and whipped up that blast of ice... or maybe it was a message to the human race to slow down a bit. Anyway, have a better one, y'all!
