Making s’mores around a campfire is the quintessential end to a summer’s day. Even if you don’t have a fire pit handy, there’s no better day than today to experiment with the plethora of different spins on the classic graham-mallow-chocolate combo. Read on for tips and tricks on celebrating this delicious holiday!

August 10th is National S’mores Day!

First, let’s talk about the original s’more, and how to ensure you are making it as delicious as possible. S’mores enthusiasts live and die by the classic chocolate- graham cracker- marshmallow combo. Make sure your chocolate is melted before adding your golden brown marshmallow. If you’re around the campfire, put the chocolate on the graham and place it near the edge of the fire. If you’re at home, microwave the chocolate on the cracker base for about 15 seconds. You won’t believe the difference this simple step can make! Another essential s’more making trick is to allow your campfire to burn down to its embers, allowing you to cook your mallow to perfection. This may take up to an hour, so be patient!

Now it is time to experiment. If you’ve never ventured off the beaten path of the original s’more…today is the day!


Try subbing out the classic graham cracker and replacing it with a fudge striped cookie, a biscuit (with strawberries added, it’s a s’more shortcake!), a banana (wrapped in foil and filled with chocolate chips and mini mallows), chocolate chip cookies (!!!), peanut butter cookies (!!!!!), pretzels, salty crackers (for an amazing combination of salty and sweet), mini donuts, shortbread, chocolate graham crackers, or whatever your heart desires! As you can see, the possibilities are endless, so let your imagination run wild.

Changing up the chocolate element of the s’more is a fun way to make it your own creation! A hazelnut chocolate-y spread is a great alternative to classic milk chocolate squares, and its smooth texture eliminates the need to wait for your chocolate to melt. Not to mention it is delicious! You can also use any of your favorite meltable candy, which will forever change your outlook on s’mores.


I really would not mess with the mallow, since it is the heart and soul of the s’more, but if you are not near any sort of heat source (fire, stove, oven, microwave, candle, etc) and you are craving a s’more, marshmallow fluff could do the trick, although it lacks the warmth and toasted outer layer found in a toasted marshmallow.


Cookie dough. Peanut Butter (and jelly!). Hot Fudge. Basically anything sweet and delicious that you can fit in between two crackers. Go forth and experiment with flavors!
