Honey Facts and Fun

  • Honey is one of Mother Nature’s sweeteners. Even the Ancient Egyptians used it! Try it as syrup on pancakes or to add flavoring to ice cream

  • Honey makes a great natural home remedy: for dry lips, rub honey on and leave overnight. For a sore throat, drink warm lemon tea sweetened with honey.
  • Thanks to its low water content and high acidity (typically a pH between 3.0 and 6.0), properly preserved honey can be kept for decades.
  • Give yourself a facial: Spread honey over your face and leave for 10 minutes. Wash away with warm water. The honey tightens pores just as well as expensive facial masks do.

  • For a fun activity for kids, create a word search for these honey terms: apiculture, apis, beekeeper, colony, comb, drone, hive, honey, nectar, pollen, queen, and worker.
  • Honey contains a range of vitamins and minerals, depending on the botanical sources it was created from.

Honey is a versatile ingredient that can be used to add a little sweetness to ordinary condiments like mustard. Try this delicious and simple recipe to create your own honey mustard from The Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids!
