• Josephine Peary was the first woman to join a polar expedition– 1891
• Norwegian-born fishermen George Harbo and Frank Samuelsen began a 55-day row across the Atlantic, setting off from the Battery in New York City and reaching the the British island of St. Mary’s (part of the Isles of Scilly) on August 1. It was a row of more than 3,200 nautical miles. After a brief rest, they then went on to row to their original destination of Le Havre, France, arriving there on August 7. – 1896
