Full Old Moon

This full Moon occurs at 8:27 A.M. EST (5:27 A.M. PST). It is the second full Moon in January 2018, and therefore is commonly called a Blue Moon. This is also a "Supermoon" because the full Moon occurs close to the time of perigee (which occurs on January 30, Eastern Time). Perigee is the point in the Moon's orbit where it is closest to Earth.A lunar eclipse also takes place on this day; some eastern parts of North America will only experience a partial event, and not be able to see totality. Parts of central and western North America will be able to see at least some of totality before the Moon sets. Hawaii, Alaska, and much of northwestern Canada will see the entire event. The full Moon during a total lunar eclipse is sometimes called a Blood Moon because it often turns an orange-red color during totality.
