Long-Range Forecast 2017 U.S. Map

The 2016-2017 long range weather weather forecast summary for the U.S. and Canada, courtesy of The 2017 Old Farmer’s Almanac.

There have been many almanacs over the years, but there’s only one Old Farmer’s Almanac—North America’s biggest, best-selling, and oldest almanac since George Washington’s time as president of the U.S.!

For 225 years, we have been forecasting weather with amazing accuracy at times. Our historical average rate for “forecasting the direction of temperature and precipitation from normal” is 80%. In every annual edition, we publish our accuracy from the year before, good or bad.  See how we predict the weather.

General long range weather 2017

Get ready for a shift from last year!  For the winter of 2016–2017, we expect temperatures to be much colder than last winter but still above normal. Winter 2017 will also feature below-normal snowfall overall; the snowy exception is the northern tier of the U.S., which can expect to be blanketed in white.

  • Winter will be colder in much of the eastern two-thirds of the nation. Exceptions will be in a swatch from North Dakota to Maine, which will have below-normal temperatures. Most of the Pacific states will have below-normal temperatures, with above-normal temperatures in the Intermountain region and Desert Southwest.
  • Snowfall will be above normal from southern New England and western New York southward through the Appalachians, but not in northern New England. Snowfall will also be above what’s typical from eastern Minnesota to the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan and southward to St. Louis, Missouri; and from central North Dakota westward to the Pacific. We expect below-normal snowfall in most other places that normally receive snow.
  • Precipitation will be below normal across most of the southern two-thirds of the nation. However, precipitation will be above normal in the North, with the primary exceptions being above-normal rainfall in northern California, southern Oregon, portions of the western Lower Lakes region, and Florida. With rainfall below normal in most of California, the drought there will continue.
  • In Canada, brace for more snow and colder-than-average temperatures throughout most parts of the country. The exceptions to the winter of white will be Manitoba, portions of Saskatchewan, and northern sections across the land. While snowfall will generally be below normal in these areas, temperatures will remain chilly

Keep in mind that The Old Farmer’s Almanac predictions are made well in advance. The forecasts are meant to give readers a general sense of what kind of winter is expected, compared to past winters.

Weather Predictions 2017

The Editors's picture

The month of October 2017 brings fairly average temperatures in your region (55 degrees) and also near-normal precipitation (one inch below average).  The end of October may bring showers.  Keep in mind, however, that October is the last month of our annual forecast and it’s made over 18 months in advance, so this is a very long- long- range estimate. Whatever weather brings, we will you a long and happy marriage!

Long-Range forecast 2017

According to The 2017 Old Farmer’s Almanac, that time period should have “isolated thunderstorms.” Therefore, it shouldn’t be heavy, but you’ll want to be prepared. All our best wishes for a happy marriage!

Weather predictions from Old FM Almanac vs Farmers Almanac

The Old Farmers Almanac 2016 2017 weather predictions are drastically different from the other Farmers Almanac....Why?

We publish “The Old Farmer’s

The Editors's picture

We publish “The Old Farmer’s Almanac,” the almanac which has been published since 1792 when George Washington was president. It’s the almanac with the little yellow cover.  There are many other almanacs across North America (and have been for decades) and we can not speak to their methodology. However, here’s how we predict the weather.

Sunny Blue Skies

Getting married May 20th 2017 in Long Branch NJ on the beach! Any prediction for that day?

weather 2017

The Editors's picture

Long-range predictions aren’t that exact, however, we can tell you that the month of May in the Atlantic Corridor region is a little wetter than average. The week you’re getting married looks sunny, warm, and pleasant; the weeks surround your wedding week show some rain.  At the very early point, it’s possible for the weather trends to shift so you should be mentally prepared!

Canadian in Oklahoma

I'm from Canada but live in Oklahoma and really want to have a nice, cold, snowy winter!! We don't get it much but a couple good snow storms would just make me so happy!!!

Wishing for Snow in VA

I am scheduled to travel to Richmond, Virginia, February 11-16, 2017 for a work-related conference. I hope to at least see a few days of heavy rain or better yet, snow! I live in hot, muggy insect-infested Los Angeles, California and wish to visit a place where it's nice and cold.

What is your prediction?

Richmond, Virginia, is in Region 2. For that region, we predict for Feb 10-15: Snowstorms, then sunny, cold. For Feb 16-19: Snow to rain. Looks like you might get your wish!

Well, that is not what the persimmon seed said. The spoon says lots of wet snow for MS.

Farmers almanac

I think the new addition of the farmers almanac should start with the new year. I always give almanacs as Christmas gifts, and the fall an early winter has already passed. I am looking at my 2016 almanac for 2016 fall an early winter for casts an there is none

when winter starts...

The Editors's picture

Hi, Tami, Thank you for your interest in The Old Farmer’s Almanac and for your sharing them with your family and friends as gifts. All of the dated events in the Almanac are for the calendar year (Jan to Dec) on the cover except the weather and here’s why: Traditionally, almanacs have gone on sale in the fall and the weather forecasts “concluded” in the fall because that was/is the conclusion of the farming/gardening season. That idea dates from hundreds of years ago when they were distributed and used within a relatively small geographic area, so everyone was on the same schedule. Now they are distributed across the nation…but the tradition continues, knowing that some folks have extended growing seasons in some parts of the country. But by starting to sell them in the fall—or, as we do, in August—folks have plenty of time to be ready for the next growing season, for the next year, and of course, for the winter.

The “winter” for many long-range weather forecasters, including ours, spans the period from November to March—not from the Dec solstice to the Mar equinox, as the calendar indicates. The longer “season” enables them to cover the meteorological winter. The short-range forecasters, such as those we all see/hear on TV and radio and elsewhere seldom speak to this longer span of time.

You are one of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people who share the Almanac as a Christmas gift, and we really appreciate it. (And we hope your family and friends do, too!) They are getting a whole year of everything—and a whole year of weather, just on a slightly diff timeframe. (We hesitate to suggest that if you/they wanted it, perhaps you could give them and “early Christmas” gift—but we realize that may not work for you for numerous reasons.)

We hope this explanation helps. And thanks again for spreading cheer with a yellow cover on it. Merry Christmas!

long range forecast for Warwick, RI - 27 February and 6 March

Hello. I need to host an event in Warwick, RI on one of these dates. I will have people flying in from all over the country and am always fearful of the weather this time of the year. I have never used the Farmer's Almanac before. What advise do you have for me?

Winter weather

We live in north central Ontario Canada, what can we expect for winter

Winter forecast 2016-2017

The Editors's picture

If you scroll up to see the Canadian weather map for winter, notice it says “cold” and “snowy.” This means that the weather will be colder than normal with above-normal snowfall and precipitation. (When we speak to what’s “normal,” we are referring to 30-year statistical averages, prepared by government meteorological agencies.) I hope this is helpful.

Eastern Mich. winter

I read the comment about the Michigan mitten, but am uncertain as the eastern part of MI from the thumbtip down looks like it _may_ be a different color. Did you mean that area along the lake to be blue or green? It makes a difference if off the lake there we are Cold and Snowy or are we Mild and Wet?

Upcoming winter 2016-17 forecast for the Great Lakes region

want to know how much snow and cold we are expected to get around these parts.

Great Lakes Snow

The Editors's picture

Hi, Andrea, Scroll up to see the US Winter Weather map, and notice the varying forecasts in the areas around the Great Lakes. Briefly, unless you’re in the “Mitten of Michigan” you will need your mittens and a shovel (maybe a plow), plenty o’ heating fuel of your choice, a full larder (pantry) for those days when you won’t be able to travel. For monthly/daily forecast details on exactly where you are, purchase an Almanac or check back. We post the months, two at a time.

Here’s hoping you get the weather you want!
