The Man of Signs (Zodiac Man)

Connecting the Zodiac and the Body

Ancient astrologers believed that each astrological sign of the zodiac influenced a specific part of the body. The Man of Signs was created to visually represent this belief.

Astrology has played a role in the predictive power of almanacs since the earliest days of their publication, thousands of years ago.

Within the pages of The Old Farmer’s Almanac—in addition to astronomical and meteorological reference material—you’ll find an abundance of traditional astrological information, ranging from the dates of Mercury Retrograde and the monthly Best Days, to Gardening by the Moon’s Sign and the Man of Signs.

The Man of Signs

Some of our readers use the Man of Signs to determine the best time to do activities related to certain parts of the body. The first sign of the zodiac—Aries—is attributed to the head, with the rest of the signs moving down the body, ending with Pisces at the feet.

How to Follow the Man of Signs

Consult the chart below to see which parts of the body are associated with which signs and dates. According to astrology, it is considered a poor time to do an activity that involves the given body part within the associated range of dates. For example, because Aries is connected to the head, it would be considered unfavorable to have an eye examination during the time of Aries (March 21 to April 20).

Please Note: The Old Farmer’s Almanac does not give medical advice. Consult with a medical professional before making any decisions related to your health or the health of loved ones.

Our Astrology Moon Sign Calendar will not give you the exact time that the Moon enters or leaves a sign. You might try Llewellyn's Moon Sign Book (those times might be listed in Central Time). It is available through Llewellyn's web site, Amazon, and other online book sellers.

Please know that we do not provide medical advice. Always consult your physician when planning surgery and work within the range of dates that s/he advises.
Some astrologers will work with you in depth, using your natal chart and looking at other factors, such as transits, to determine the best times for certain activities, including surgery. That is not something that we can do for you. But we can give you some general astrological guidelines that many of our readers use. According to the Man of Signs, Capricorn influences the knees. Astrologically speaking, for surgery on the knees, you would want to avoid dates around the time when the Moon's astrological place is in Capricorn--select a time when the Moon is several signs away. (Don't use the Left-Hand Calendar pages of the Almanac, which lists the Moon's astronomical place, not astrological. They sometimes differ.) Some astrologers also advise that you should avoid surgery around the time of the Full Moon, to help you to heal faster.
For instant access to the Moon's astrological signs for 2015, download our 14-month Moon's Sign Calendar here for a small fee:

If you already have a copy of The 2015 Old Farmer's Almanac, you can also find this chart on page 247 (national edition).

Double knee replacement

In the mo. Feb

My mother always used the

My mother always used the signs for nearly everything and the best I can remember she used to say that if you are having surgery on your feet, try to get it done when the signs are in the head or neck - as far away from the surgery location as possible. If surgery for the arms, go in the signs of the feet, etc.
Planting works well if you use the signs, I used to think that it was a bunch of hogwash until I compared my mom's garden to other people's that didn't use the signs. Her garden was always outproducing other gardens and was a lot smaller - not just one year but every year as far back as I can remember.

Thank you for sharing that!

Just had two failed attempts

Just had two failed attempts to fill a tooth on an aries moon. I am debilitated and suffered heart palpitations for nealry 35 hours. Was frightening. Should I interpret it as a slap from the CREATOR of all things ?

Aries rules the head and

Aries rules the head and anything to do with the mouth should be done under a sign that rules a body part that falls below the heart. Pisces rules the feet and is as far from the mouth as one can get, so that might be a good time to consider this procedure. Also during any sign that rules a body part below the heart and as far from the mouth as you can get. It worked for me when I had to have five teeth extracted, at the same time, before having open heart surgery in Dec.,2013. I had the procedure done in early November under the sign of Scorpio, as I could not wait until Pisces returned in 2014. I had no pain, nor excessive bleeding and no complications, even though I have to take a blood thinner daily. I was taught this by my grandfather, as a young girl.

you could be allergic to the freezing solution that the dentist gave you. I had that happen to me a few times, and when I finally told the dentist, he changed what he was using for freezing. I no longer get short of breath or the heart palpatations when I see him now.

Hi Janet, The "OPH" stands for Ophiuchus, a constellation primarily north of the zodiac but with a small corner between Scorpius and Sagittarius. (See the "How to Use" section on pages 124 and 125 of The Old Farmer's Almanac.) Hope this helps!

I am trying to schedule a knee replacement surgery in May or June of 2014. I am thinking of May 27, 28, or 29. I am told I should try to have the surgery when there is a new moon and not when the moon is in Capricorn. Please advised.

I am scheduled for surgery

I am scheduled for surgery on my foot for a ganglion cyst
on April 15th which is during a blood moon.
I am concerned about this, any opinions / or suggestions?

My Mom always told me to plan

My Mom always told me to plan surgery & teeth removal when the signs are below the heart. Best being Pisces, Aquarius, & Capricorn. You'll have less bleeding, pain & fewer complications. Unfortunately I had to have 2 teeth removed (decayed under filling). I did what she said & picked a good date. I had no pain & bleeding stopped on way home!
