Next Total Eclipse of the Sun

Total Eclipses of Sun

When is the next total eclipse of the Sun? See our dates when the total solar eclipse is visible from the U.S. and Canada.

What is a Total Solar Eclipse?

A total eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun, blocking out its light. Although the entire eclipse can last a couple of hours, its spectacular total phase lasts only a few minutes.

The chances of observing a total solar eclipse from your backyard are very rare; Totality exists only along a narrow path on Earth’s surface.

At any one spot on Earth, a total eclipse occurs only once every 385 years, on average!

Mark these solar eclipse dates on your calendar so you don’t miss any of this century’s spectacles!

Total Eclipse Dates Visible from U.S. and Canada

  • August 21, 2017. Makes a 185-mile-wide shadow across the continental United States from west to east.

  • April 8, 2024. Visible in Canada’s Maritime provinces.

  • August 23, 2044. Begins at sunrise on the Montana border and move through the Canadian Prairie provinces toward the North Pole.

  • August 12, 2045. The longest total phase in U.S. history—6 minutes, crossing from west to east!

  • May 11, 2078 and May 1, 2079. These two solar eclipses will both be visible in the United States. In Canada, the second one will be visible only in the Maritime provinces.
  • September 14, 2099. Visible in the north-central and mid-Atlantic states, and southwestern Canada.

A new hope ?

Can the scientists calculate precisely the next time the total solar eclipse will be visible in our country? The answer to this question would be sure, yes, it can. It has not been long before the total eclipse of the sun that was visible in our country on 11.08.1999, more precisely in the Bucharest area and it was calculated precisely when the next a similar phenomenon visible in our country, namely from informational sources on the net: "On the territory of Romania, the next total sun eclipse will be visible on 3 September 2081". What I am astonished now is that the phenomenon is repeated in our contemporary days more often and it is even wider on the surface of the earth. I remember seeing an art movie when the total solar eclipse took place very rarely (once over at least 700 years the visible phenomenon in the same place in India was called the "Black Sun" ) .On how many total eclipses of sun occurred in the years 2011-2017. From safe sources on the net on 13.11.2012 there was another total solar eclipse visible in the areas of Australia, S Pacific. Another total eclipse occurred on March 20, 2015, visible in N Atlantic, Faroe Islands, Svalbard. From 1999 to 2015, there were two total suns visible in other areas of the Earth. The first happened at a time interval of three years and two months and twenty-eight days and the second at an even shorter time, namely two years and four months and about a week. On 9.03.2016 there is a total solar eclipse visible in the Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Pacific areas over a period of 11 months and 21 days. On 21.08.2017 the next total solar eclipse occurs at a time of one and five months and twelve days. It would have been a downward trend in the time when the next eclipse occurred and from now on there was a return over the 11 months and 21 days as it was the slowest downward period of time this phenomenon is becoming ever more prevalent more often on several areas of the Earth. Still from the same source until 2020 there are two phenomena of the same kind, one predicted to occur on 2.07.2019 visible from the Oc Oc. Pacific, Chile, Argentina over a period of time that seems to tend to return back to two years and four months and about a week, that is accurately predicted to occur after a period of two years and twelve days and the last known to occur even in 2020 on December 14, 2020, that is, at a time interval of one year, five months and twelve days, a slower further growth (or a slower and surely lower convergence if we consider the phenomenon but if it can coincide with that very long return value of less than two years and four months with the change of vehicle pollution norm from Euro 4 to Euro 5 and then Euro 6 in 2017, here we are dealing with a sudden return of the situation to normal to 2019. In 2020 we can consider that there is also a return to the previous value considered maximumto be exceeded ulterio r if the prognoses that are slightly higher than the value a long time ago, ie 2017 -2019 two years and twelve days, are obtained with the time after 2020. From here before, maybe well before the year 2081 sure we can talk about this phenomenon correlated with the reality of the environment in which we live and influence it more negatively. If our civilization had evolved further, much sooner would have seen this change in the good to return back in time regarding this phenomenon. From here there may be many other possibilities in our world starting as soon as possible from now to worry we diminish this world phenomenon. I think this situation also means that it is also a premature apocalyptic phenomenon ("the moon is red ...") It is a pity on us on this planet Earth to still believe that our world is not real, when in fact we are only at a revolutionary stage "Euro 6" along with all the supermarkets assisted by the new state-of-the-art "6-7" technologies, which is finally beneficial and not destructive.Once a few tens of thousands of years, it is happening to our times, successfully substitutes the old technologies as well as the updates of the computer versions always applied on the new technologies to come back to more normal times.

ECLIPSE 03.08.16

Thanks Bob B. for the great show yesterday via slooh.com!!! That was FANTASTIC!!!

Eclipse on the coming ( Mar 08, 2016) 4 days from now. be post on ( Twitter/ other sites.)

On August 21, 2017, maximum

On August 21, 2017, maximum duration of the total solar eclipse will occur in the Shawnee National Forest just south of Carbondale Illinois for 2 minutes and 44 seconds http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/d... . NASA's data pointing to Kentucky is out-of-date and they have not updated their eclipse information in years!

i have seen several total

i have seen several total eclipses awesome to view with proper eye protection

I watched an eclipse with my

I watched an eclipse with my class in elementary school between 1965 and 1973. I was in Lafayette, CA How can I find the date and informatio about that eclipse ??

awesome stuff comes from

awesome stuff comes from awesome authors - like you guys! wow. you blew my mind. :)

Ah, shucks. Thank you!

Ah, shucks. Thank you!

i thought we had a solar

i thought we had a solar eclipse in the early 1980's...i could swear i watched it from my home in austin, texas...am i mistaken?

Yes, there was a total solar

Yes, there was a total solar eclipse in 1980 (Feb 16), 1981 (Jul 31), and 1983 (June 11). See this link for historical solar eclipse dates: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/S...

You are not mistaken about

You are not mistaken about that solar eclipse. I was in college in Nacogdoches, Texas and we made the boxes for viewing. It was in the morning the best i can remember but not at daybreak.

There has not been a total

There has not been a total solar eclipse in the contiguous United States since 1979 and totality was only viewable from the Pacific Northwest ... There was, however, an annular eclipse that would have been partially viewable from Texas on August 10th, 1980. Unlike a total eclipse, you would need either eclipse glasses or a pinhole camera to view it and even then, at your location it probably would not have been very impressive. Trust me, if you've witnessed an eclipse during totality, it would not be something that you would forget. I suggest planning a trip to Kentucky in 2017 to witness a truly awe-inspiring event.
