The Easiest Garden Ever: Herbs in a Bag

Print Friendly and PDF

Start an herb garden in less than 10 minutes? Yes, that’s right! While thumbing through The Garden-Fresh Cookbook — wedged alongside Chicken With Rice and Poached Chicken With Niçoise Sauce — I discovered The Easiest Garden Ever: Herbs in a Bag on page 178.

The herbs recommended are basil, chives, marjoram, oregano, parsley, sage, or thyme. I couldn’t pick just one, so I chose all of them. I tend to want to try a little bit of everything, so when I found a Gourmet Herb Mixture at my local hardware store, I was ecstatic. I purchased the mix of herbs and a bag of potting soil before heading home.

Here are the easy steps to get your herbs growing: Herbs in a Bag!

1. Lay the bag of soil flat on the ground.
2. Poke a few drainage holes in the top surface.
3. Roll the bag over, then cut a few holes in the new top surface.
4. Insert herb seedlings into the holes and firm the soil around the roots.
5. Water and fertilize as you would a regular garden bed.
6. Set the bed into a wheelbarrow or child’s wagon and move it into and out of the sunlight as needed.

Now, with time, regular watering and fertilizing, and some spring sunshine, I look forward to harvesting my first herbs from this couldn’t-be-easier garden!
