Francis “Frank” Gouin (plant physiologist) was born on Friday, June 3, 1938.

Known as “The Bay Gardener,” among his many accomplishments, he had taught horticulture at the University of Maryland for more than 30 years, conducted pioneering research on composting, and developed a slow-release container fertilizer that came to be known as Osmocote.
