I innocently asked a customer yesterday if he needed some lighter fluid to go along with the several bags of charcoal briquettes he was purchasing. He explained that he placed the bags (split open) in several locations around the interior of his cottage when closing it up to prevent musty smells. Have you heard of this practice, and does it work?

That trick is something we’ve recommended to our readers in the past. Charcoal briquettes do a fine job of absorbing musty odors. Your customer could have used the lighter fluid as well, however, because when he replaces the charcoal briquettes with fresh ones, he could use the old ones in his grill.
