If a president is impeached or dies...

Print Friendly and PDF
If a president is impeached or dies in office, and the vice president is put in place, who is next in line if he should die, etc.?
Answer
The order of presidential succession is established in the Constitution of the United States. After the vice president, we turn to members of Congress. First in line would be the Speaker of the House and next is the President Pro Tempore of the Senate. After that, it’s members of the cabinet: The Secretaries of State, Treasury, and Defense Departments; the Attorney General; the Secretaries of the Interior, Agriculture, Commerce, Labor, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, and Energy Departments; and, finally, the Secretary of Education, which at this moment is Betsy DeVos.
