Fall Forward With the September Edition of the Almanac Monthly e-Magazine

  • The Harvest Moon is the full Moon nearest to the autumnal equinox, which occurs on September 22 at 10:29 P.M. EDT this year. It can occur in either September or October and is bright enough to allow the finishing of all harvest chores—hence its name.
  • Fall is the perfect season to curl up on a comfy chair with some hot tea. Finding the right chair, however, is often difficult. For comfort that lasts, look for springs under the cushions and in the back. Be sure to “test drive” the chair first by sitting in a natural, relaxed position. The small of your back should be comfortably supported.
  • Nothing says autumn like apple pie! We’ve got a first prize–winning recipe from the 1997 National Pie Championship that gives the pie classic a nice twist: The apples are baked twice!
  • There are 60 simple all-purpose rules that every thinking person who is alive and well ought to know, especially if a September of success is desired. These include:
    • Dress warmly
    • Proceed at your own risk
    • In an emergency, pull the handle
    • Do not fold, crumple, or mutilate
    • Do not feed the elephants
    • Call your mother
