Monthly History Highlights

May 1914 – Mother's Day

In 1872, Julia Ward Howe proposed a day set aside to honor mothers, and in 1905, Miss Anna M. Jarvis of Philadelphia continued to promote the cause. It wasn’t until 1914, however, that President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill declaring the second Sunday in May a legal holiday to be celebrated as Mother’s Day. This year, the holiday falls on Sunday, May 10.

May 25, 2020 – Memorial Day

After World War I, red poppies became a symbol of remembrance for those who died in service to their countries. The idea started after Canadian John McCrae wrote his poem “In Flanders Fields” in 1915. Today, red paper poppies are usually sold on Memorial Day, and when you make a donation to a veterans’ group, you receive a poppy. This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 25, in the U.S.
